Broncos Ride Two Big Innings To Comeback Win Over Cal Poly

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - After being down six runs, the Broncos used two big innings to pull out an exciting 11-6 midweek victory. The Broncos beat Cal Poly for the second time in 2012 by a score of 11-6. The win puts Santa Clara at 10-3 and Cal Poly at 9-4.

RHP Chris Mendoza (0-0; 9.00) made the start for Santa Clara and went 5.0 innings while allowing six runs, five earned, on seven hits. He struck out none and walked two in a no-decision. LHP Max Deering (1-0; 2.84) picked up the win while pitching 3.0 innings in relief of Mendoza. RF Lucas Herbst continued his red-hot season at the plate by going 3-4 with three RBI. 3B Matt Glomb also had a big game, going 4-5 with three RBI and a run scored.

Santa Clara will return to the field Thurs. through Sun. for the third annual Jack Gifford Memorial Tournament co-hosted by Santa Clara and San Jose State.

"In the dugout we always stay positive and not focus on the scoreboard," said Herbst. "We were down four nothing and then down six nothing but our goal is to get one run each inning and that turned into more runs. We just played great baseball. It was awesome."

SS Mike Miller led off the game with a bomb to left on an 0-2 pitch to give the Mustangs an early lead. Mendoza recovered to get the next two outs before RF Nick Torres hit a double to right-center. 3B Jimmy Allen followed with a single to right field that knocked in the second run of the inning but he was thrown out trying to stretch the hit to a double.

Mendoza got into trouble in the second when LF David Armendariz reached on an error by SS Justin Viele and C Chris Hoo was hit by a pitch to put two on with no outs. DH Jordan Brower was at the plate when Mendoza balked the runners to second and third. Brower grounded out to second but another run came in to make the score 3-0. Mendoza committed his second balk of the inning to put Hoo on third. 2B Evan Busby walked on the next pitch to put runners on the corners. Miller hit a sac fly to right to extend the lead to 4-0 Cal Poly.

LF Pat Stover led off the home half of the second with a double that hit off the shortstop and landed in no-man's land. 2B Kyle DeMerritt laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Stover to third with only one out. DH T.J. Braff was unable to bring in the run as he popped out to the first baseman. Glomb came through with the two-out RBI on a single to left. After two innings, Cal Poly led 4-1.

After a quick out, Torres hit a monster home run to left center that cleared the batting cages beyond the outfield fence. 3B Jimmy Allen and Armendariz hit singles on the next two pitches thrown by Mendoza. The runners advanced 90 feet on a wild pitch. Hoo followed with a sacrifice fly to left that made the score 6-1.

Viele led off the home half of the third with an infield single. After an pop out by CF Matt Ozanne, 1B Andrew Biancardi went through the left side to put two on for the Broncos. Herbst smacked a single up the middle to bring in the second Santa Clara run of the night. Stover walked to load the bases for DeMerritt with still just one out but he hit into a double play to end the inning.

RHP Michael Holback came in to relieve RHP Michael Dingilian to start the bottom of the third. The Broncos got a two-out rally going on a walk and two infield singles to load the bases. Biancardi grounded into a fielder's choice to end the inning with the score still 6-2.

Glomb smoked a double off the left-center field wall to lead off the bottom of the sixth. C Peter Summerville drilled a single to left to put runners on the corners. Holback was lifted for RHP Nick Grim who walked Viele to load the bases. Ozanne struck out looking for the first out of the inning. Biancardi singled to left-center to make the score 6-3 and keep the bases loaded. Herbst cut the lead to one with a two-run single to right field. Stover walked and ball four was a wild pitch that allowed the tying run to score. Herbst was caught stealing third for the second out. DeMerritt gave the Broncos a 7-6 lead on a single past the diving third baseman. Drew Ozanne came in to pinch-hit for Braff and struck out to end the inning.

Glomb got a lead off hit for the second inning in a row when he singled to center in the seventh. Summerville laid down a beautiful sacrifice bunt to advance Glomb into scoring position. Glomb went to third on a fly out to right by Viele but M. Ozanne flew out to end the inning.

Biancardi led off the bottom of the eighth with a single and DeMerritt reached on a one-out error after a sac bunt. D. Ozanne doubled down the left field line to put the Broncos up 8-6. Glomb followed with a single to center to knock in two more runs. Summerville doubled to left center to keep the inning going and make the score 11-6 Santa Clara. After a Viele walk, M. Ozanne struck out looking to end the inning.

Bronco closer RHP Paul Twining came in to pitch the ninth for Santa Clara. He got the Mustangs to go in order to seal the 11-6 win for Santa Clara.

RHP Reed Reilly came in for the Mustangs in the bottom of the seventh ... Greg Harisis pinch ran in the bottom of the eighth for Kyle DeMerritt ... RHP Braden Young of Cal Poly made his collegiate debut with two outs in the bottom of the eighth.
