BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - A big sixth inning doomed Santa Clara baseball as it fell to CSU Bakersfield by a score of 4-0. With the loss the Broncos are now 17-10 while the Roadrunners are 13-15.

Santa Clara starter RHP Tommy Nance (3-2; 3.29) got the loss while throwing 5.1 innings of four run ball. He allowed eight hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Offensively the Broncos were shut down by LHP Jeff McKenzie who threw a complete game shutout and only allowed three hits while striking out 12. DH T.J. Braff, 2B Greg Harisis and SS Justin Viele had one hit each.

Santa Clara and Bakersfield will play a doubleheader tomorrow Sat., April 7 with the first game starting at 12 p.m.

Santa Clara had its first chance to score in the top of the third. After a lead off pop out to second by 3B Matt Glomb, Harisis laid down a bunt single and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Viele. CF Matt Ozanne worked a walk after falling behind 0-2 but RF Lucas Herbst fouled out to end the inning.

Nance got into trouble in the bottom of the fourth when C Frank Martinez hit a lead off single up the middle and 1B Cael Brockmeyer followed with a single of his own to put two on with no out. 3B D.C. Legg laid down a sacrifice bunt that put the runners on second and third. LF KevinYounger lined into a double play to end the threat.

The Roadrunners were at it again in the bottom of the fifth when CF Andrew Letourneau singled up the middle to lead off the frame and P Jeff McKenzie walked on a 3-2 pitch. RF Jordie Hein flied out to left for the first out and SS Tyler Shryock grounded out to third to put runners on second and third with two outs. 2B Oscar Sanay was unable to break the scoreless tie as he grounded out to shortstop.

Viele led off the top of the sixth with a single to left center. M. Ozanne sacrificed Viele to second but Herbst lined out to center field for the second out of the inning. LF Pat Stover couldn't come up with the two-out RBI as he struck out swinging.

Martinez tripled to right field to start the bottom of the sixth. Brockmeyer followed with a RBI single to right to knock in the first of the game. Legg was hit by a pitch and Younger singled on a bunt to third to load the bases. Letourneau fell behind 1-2 but worked a walk to make the score 2-0 Bakersfield. After a fielder's choice that got the runner at home, Hein reached on another fielder's choice that brought in a run. Shryock walked to make the score 4-0 Bakersfield. RHP Chris Heckert came in to replace Nance and got a fly ball to right that turned into a double play when Harisis threw out the runner from third tagging up to end the inning.

Santa Clara went 1-2-3 in the ninth to end the game and give Bakersfield a 4-0 win.
