Santa Clara Taken Down By Cal 4-0

BERKELEY, Calif. - In a rematch of an April 10 8-5 Bronco victory at Schott Stadium, Santa Clara baseball fell to Cal by a final of 4-0. The Broncos move to 18-16 overall while Cal is now 20-15.

Leading the team with six saves, RHP Paul Twining (3-3; 2.73) made his second start of the season and got a loss in 4.0 innings. He allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits with two strikeouts and no walks. 2B Greg Harisis and RF Stephen Takahashi led the way on offense by each going 2-4.

Santa Clara returns home for a weekend series vs. Pepperdine with the first game scheduled for Fri., April 20 at 6 p.m. On Sat., April 21 Bronco players and coaches will shave their heads in support of St. Baldrick's "Base Bald" program that raises money to fund research for childhood cancer. Cal put together a two out rally to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. 2B Tony Renda doubled down the right field line after Twining recorded two quick outs. Twining struck out 1B Mitch Delfino but a passed ball allowed Delfino to reach and Renda to score from second. After C Chad Krist singled to put runners on the corners, CF Chad Bunting flied out to right to end the inning.

In the bottom of the third Cal was able to score another run after two quick outs. Again Renda doubled, this time to left center, and Delfino singled through the left side to bring in a run. Delfino would go to second on the throw to the plate and an infield single by Krist put runners on first and third. Bunting was unable to come through and ended the inning with a fly out to left field.

LHP Powell Fansler replaced Twining to start the bottom of the fifth but served up a one out home run to RF Andrew Knapp to make the score 3-0 in favor of the Bears. Delfino and Krist singled with two outs but Bunting flew out for the third time for the last out.

Santa Clara had its best chance to score in the top of the six. 3B Evan Peters, C Quinton Perry and Harisis all singled to load the bases with no outs. SS Justin Viele flew out to left field for the first out before Cal made a pitching change. CF Matt Ozanne hit into a fielder's choice to third where the runner was gunned down at the plate. LF Pat Stover couldn't come through with a two out hit and the inning ended with the score still 3-0 Cal.

The Bears added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth off of new Bronco pitcher LHP Max Deering. Bunting singled up the middle and moved to third on a passed ball and a wild pitch. After a walk to LF Darrel Matthews, SS Chris Paul laid down a bunt single to bring home the unearned run. A double steal and a walk to 3B Derek Campbell ended the day for Deering who was lifted for RHP Chris Mendoza. Mendoza got out of the jam by getting a fielder's choice out at home and a fly out to end the inning.

After two pinch hitters made outs in the top of the ninth for Santa Clara, a third pinch hitter, Stephen Meade, was hit by a pitch. Takahashi followed with an infield single to shortstop to put the tying run on deck. Casey Husband pinch hit for DH C.J. Jacobe but hit into a fielder's choice to seal the win for Cal.
