Broncos Dropped By Pepperdine 6-5

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - On a hot day at Schott Stadium, Santa Clara baseball lost to Pepperdine by a final of 6-5. With the win Santa Clara is now19-17 overall with a 2-9 mark in conference while Pepperdine moves to 23-16 overall with a 6-5 mark in the WCC.

RHP Mike Couch (1-5; 4.08) picked up a no-decision in the start while throwing 6.0 innings and giving up two runs, one earned, on five hits with two walks and six strikeouts. RHP Paul Twining (3-4; 3.54) picked up the loss in 1.2 innings of relief by surrendering three runs on the top of the eighth. On offense CF Matt Ozanne went 2-4 with a home run and two runs scored. RF Greg Harisis and C Quinton Perry added one RBI each.

The series wraps-up at Schott Stadium tomorrow, Sun., April 22 with a 1 p.m. game.

M. Ozanne smoked his second homer of the year with one out in the bottom of the second to give the Broncos an early 1-0 lead.

C Miles Silverstein doubled down the left field line to start the top of the third for Pepperdine. CF Matt Gelalich fouled off a sacrifice bunt attempt with two strikes for the first out. Lead-off man SS Zach Vincej walked to put two on for 3B Austin Davidson who singled through the right side to load the bases. Couch threw a pick off throw into center field to tie the game at 1-1. 2B Joe Sever popped out to first base in foul territory and RF Tony Cooper grounded out to first to end the inning with just one run coming across.

M. Ozanne led off the bottom of the fourth with an infield single that he smoked off the pitcher's glove and stole his team-best 11th base. Perry hit a RBI single to right center to put Santa Clara back on top 2-1. DH T.J. Braff followed with a hard hit base hit back up the middle. A failed double steal made it two outs and a runner on second for 2B Kyle DeMerritt who hit a one-hopper to first for the third out.

With two outs in the bottom of the fifth SS Justin Viele was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a passed ball. Harisis smoked a double down the left field line to knock in the run and extend the lead to 3-1.

Sever hit a home run to dead center that hit off the batter's eye to bring Pepperdine back within one run. Cooper singled through the right side for the second hit of the inning and stole second on a strike out by 1B Sam Meyer. LF Floyd Given singled to right but Harisis gunned down the runner attempting to score for the third out.

LHP Max Deering came in to pitch the top of the seventh and walked the first batter he faced. Silverstein laid down a sacrifice bunt that Deering threw down the right field line to put runners on the corners with no outs. Deering was lifted for Twining who faced pinch hitter Ryan Van Amburg. After getting ahead in the count 3-0, Van Amburg struck out looking. Vincej tied the game with a sac fly to center. Twining induced an inning-ending foul pop to third.

Sever hit an opposite-field single to right to start the top of the eighth for the Waves. Clean-up hitter Cooper laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runner to second and Meyer knocked him in with a single to right. After a fly out to center, DH Matt Forgatch singled up the middle to put another runner in scoring position. Silverstein singled over a leaping Viele at shortstop to extend the lead to 5-3. Twining was pulled for RHP Chris Mendoza who balked in the third run of the inning before walking Van Amburg. With runners now on the corners and two outs, Mendoza got a strike out to end the inning.

LF Pat Stover singled to center to start things for the Broncos in the home half of the eighth. Perry hit a grounder to third that was dropped for an error. With two on and no out, pinch hitter Evan Peters was announced and Pepperdine made a pitching change, brining in RHP Michael Swanner. Peters pulled back a bunt and hit a high-hopper over the third baseman for a RBI single and moved to second on the throw. With pinch runner Drew Ozanne on second representing the tying run, DeMerritt hit a sac fly to center that pulled the Broncos within one. D. Ozanne was cut down at home trying to score on a ground ball by 1B Andrew Biancardi. Glomb grounded out to end the inning with the score 6-5 in favor of the Waves.

New Bronco pitcher RHP Chris Heckert hit Davidson to start the top of the ninth before Sever singled back up the middle to put two on. Another sacrifice bunt by Cooper moved both runners into scoring position for Meyer who went down swinging for the second out of the inning. Heckert intentionally walked Given to load the bases before getting Forgatch to fly out to right.

Harisis hit a one out single through the left side to put the tying run on base for Santa Clara but was gunned down trying to steal. M. Ozanne flied out to center to end the game.
