SANTA CLARA, Calif. - On a beautiful Northern California day at Stephen Schott Stadium, Santa Clara baseball fell 5-2 to Saint Mary's behind a gem from RHP Kyle Barraclough. The Broncos are now 19-20 and 2-12 in WCC play and Saint Mary's is 21-19 with a 5-9 mark in conference.

LHP Powell Fansler (5-4; 3.51) got a loss in the start for Santa Clara while going 6.0 innings and surrendering two runs, one earned, on five hits. He walked three while striking out two. RF Stephen Takahashi led the way with the bat going 3-3 with a double and a walk.

The teams wrap-up the series tomorrow Sun., April 29 at 1 p.m. at Schott Stadium as Santa Clara looks to avoid the sweep.

"Lately I've just been staying relaxed at the plate and enjoy myself," said Takahashi. "I don't want to put too much pressure on myself and just play baseball. In the ninth we needed base runners so we were taking a strike and I knew this guy since he's been pitching a while. I knew he would leave one up so I just battled and let the ball get deep."

3B Patrick Wisdom doubled over the head of LF Pat Stover to start the top of the second for Saint Mary's. RF Breden Kalfus followed with an infield single to shortstop to put runners on the corners with no one out. DH Greg Ditmer grounded into a fielder's choice for the first out of the inning but a run came across to give the Gaels the early lead. A sac bunt by 2B Chris Murphy put a runner in scoring position with two outs for C Toby DeMello who popped out to first for the final out.

Fansler walked 1B Collin Ferguson to lead off the fourth and after a foul out, Kalfus singled up the middle. Ditmer also singled up the middle to load the bases with just one out. A pop up just beyond the infield was the second out and a grounder to short looked like it would get the Broncos out of the inning but Viele couldn't come up with the ball and Saint Mary's went up 2-0. Norton almost broke the game open but CF Matt Ozanne tracked down a deep fly to center on the warning track for the third out.

Perry doubled to left-center to lead things off for the Broncos in the bottom of the fifth. 3B Matt Glomb grounded out to the pitcher to advance Perry to third with one out. Viele came to the plate but was caught looking for the second out. Harisis went down swinging and the Gaels were out of the jam.

RHP James Smith came in to pitch for Santa Clara to start the top of the seventh and gave up a one-out double to Saint Mary's lead-off man CF Donald Collins. SS Ricky Boas went back up the middle to knock in the third run of the day for the Gaels. After a fly out to left by Ferguson, Wisdom followed with a deep home run to left center that hit the facing of the batting cages beyond the wall. The inning ended on a fly ball to left.

Harisis took a four-pitch walk with one out in the bottom of the eighth and after two were out Ozanne hit a high pop-up down the right field line that fell in for a double. With runners on second and third and two outs, Stover smoked a single to shortstop but Ozanne got caught off third and was tagged out after the run had scored.

In need of a ninth inning rally, Takahashi led off with a single through the right side and Braff followed with a single to center. After a visit to the mound, Perry came to the plate and knocked the third-straight Bronco single to load the bases. A pitching change by Gonzaga brought in RHP Patrick Keane. Pinch-hitting for Glomb and representing the tying run, C.J. Jacobe got caught looking for the first out. Kyle DeMerritt came in to hit for Viele and hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring in a run but Braff tried to tag-up from second and was caught in a run-down that ended the game.
