Santa Clara Rides Four-Run First Inning Past Seattle

SEATTLE, Wash. - Behind a four-run first inning, Santa Clara baseball put up eight runs to take down Seattle by a final of 8-4. With the win the Broncos are now 21-20 while Seattle drops to 19-18.

RHP James Smith (2-0; 4.94) made the start for Santa Clara and gave up four runs in 7.0 innings while allowing nine hits with two walks and six strikeouts. 2B Greg Harisis stayed hot atop the lineup by going 2-5 with a RBI and a run scored while RF Stephen Takahashi was 1-5 with a double, a run scored and three RBI.

The teams will wrap-up the short two game series tomorrow, Wed., May 2 at 12 p.m.

Santa Clara got the offense going right away in the top of the first as Harisis singled to center to lead off the game. After DH Lucas Herbst flied out, CF Matt Ozanne walked and LF Pat Stover singled to load the bases. Takahashi followed with a bases-clearing double down the right field line. With 1B T.J. Braff at the plate, Takahashi moved to third on a wild pitch and scored when Braff reached on an error by the third baseman to make the lead 4-0. The inning ended with a strike out and a caught stealing.

In the bottom of the first Seattle was able to get a run back when SS Nate Roberts hit a one-out single. After the second out Roberts moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single to right-center by C Brian Olson. After a single by DH Steve Kirbach, Smith got LF Bryndon Ecklund to fly out to end the inning.

C Quinton Perry singled to center field with one out in the top of the fourth and 3B Evan Peters was hit by a pitch. SS Justin Viele loaded the bases with a single to center in front of a Harisis RBI single to left field. Herbst grounded into a fielder's choice with another run coming across. The inning ended on an Ozanne fly out.

Santa Clara put up two more runs in the top of the fifth when Stover led-off with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a throwing error by the shortstop. Takahashi attempted a sacrifice bunt but couldn't move the runner. Perry drew a four-pitch walk and Peters smoked a double to center field to score both runners and make the Bronco lead 8-1.

The Redhawks scored in the bottom of the seventh when 1B Zach Aaker doubled to right-center with no outs. 3B Grant Newton singled to put runners on the corners and CF Marcelino Morales knocked in the run with a sacrifice fly to left field. Smith got a pop out and a strike out to end the inning.

Seattle kept fighting back in the eighth as the lead-off hitter RF Ryan Somers singled to right field in front of an Olson homer to left. After another single, Smith was lifted for RHP Chris Mendoza who got the next three outs in order.

RHP Paul Twining came in tom pitch the ninth and pitched around a throwing error by Viele at short to retire the Redhawks and give Santa Clara the 8-4 victory.
