SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Coming off of a walk-off win vs. San Francisco Sate, Santa Clara baseball was unable to keep the momentum going as it fell to San Francisco 8-2. The loss moves the Broncos to 23-21 overall with a 3-13 mark in the WCC. The Dons are now 25-28 on the season with a 10-9 record in conference play.
RHP Tommy Nance (4-4; 3.73) got hit around while picking up the loss. He allowed eight runs, seven earned, on a season-high 15 hits while striking out four and walking one in 5.0 innings. CF Matt Ozanne went 1-4 with a double and a walk on offense for Santa Clara.
The two teams return to the field tomorrow, Sat., May 12 at 1 p.m. before wrapping-up the series on Sun. May 13 at 1 p.m. for San Francisco's senior day.
Santa Clara got out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when LF Stephen Takahashi laid down a bunt single to start things off. Takahashi stole second and with one out 3B Evan Peters singled to left to bring in the run. SS Justin Viele followed with a single and after a strike out to 2B Greg Harisis, RF Lucas Herbst was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Santa Clara was unable to extend the lead as M. Ozanne flied out to centerfield to end the inning.
In the bottom of the second C Mason Morioka doubled to left field with one out and 3B Brendan Hendriks followed with a double of his own to center to tie the score at 1-1. LF Tom Barry singled to center to put runners on the corners in front of a RF Bradley Zimmer RBI single to left. After CF Justin Maffei popped out for the second out, both base runners moved up on a passed ball and scored on a 2B Jason Mahood single. Nance got out of the inning with a groundout to second.
Nance was right back in the stretch to start the third when he hit SS Adam Clear with a pitch. DH Matt Chavez singled to center and the next batter, Morioka, hit his second double in as many innings to score Clear and make the score 5-1. With runners on second and third and no one out, Nance used three ground balls to escape the inning without another run scoring.
After two quick outs in the bottom of the fourth, Mahood doubled to right and moved to third on an infield single by 1B Nik Balog. Clear came through with a two-out RBI single to left and Chavez followed with a double to put the Dons up 7-1 before Nance could escape the inning.
In the bottom of the fifth, Barry led-off with a home run to left field for the eighth San Francisco run of the night. Despite the next batter doubling, Nance did not allow another run to score.
2B Greg Harisis doubled to lead off the top of the ninth for Santa Clara and Herbst came through with a RBI single to give the Broncos their second run of the night. M. Ozanne grounded into a fielder's choice and DH Pat Stover struck out swinging before 1B T.J. Braff drew a walk to put two runners on with two out. Pinch-hitter C.J. Jacobe went down swinging to end the game and give San Francisco the 8-2 win.
