"Matt is an outstanding ballplayer with a bright future so it certainly didn't surprise me to hear about his great summer," said Santa Clara head coach Dan' O'Brien who finished his first season on the Mission campus in 2012. "He's a prospect because of his tools, but also because of his upside. As his baseball maturity develops, so will his production and ultimately his prospect status. His ceiling is very high and we're excited to help him find it.

Under O'Brien the Broncos made great strides during the 2012 season. The team won 26 games, the most since 2008 when the team won 33 games and finished third in the WCC. Santa Clara was a solid 17-11 at home and picked up wins at Texas State, vs. Wichita State, two wins vs. Cal Poly, vs. Fresno State and vs. Cal.
