Baseball's Simon Talks About Summer League Baseball and His Upcoming Senior Season for the Broncos

SANTA CLARA, Calif.- Brock Simon is getting ready to head into his final season with the Santa Clara Bronco baseball team. After wrapping up a great season for the Broncos in the spring, the Canadian native returned back to Canada to play summer league baseball for the Red Sox team. 

Having much success over the summer, Simon (BS) caught up with www.santaclarabroncos.com (SCB) about his experience playing for the Red Sox team in Canada, and what this final season goals are here at Santa Clara.
 

SCB: How does it feel to be going into your final season here at Santa Clara? Is there anything you are especially going to miss?

BS: It is a little surreal.  As cliché as it sounds, my time here has gone by faster then I ever could have imagined.  It's pretty incredible to see the new class of freshmen and to think that I was in their shoes three short years ago.  I am definitely going to miss being around such a large group of friends and teammates, and it is something I will cherish during my final year. 
 
SCB: Is playing baseball in Canada any different than playing baseball here in the States? If so, how is it different?

BS: I wouldn't say the game was different. The biggest difference was just playing with Canadian guys; there were some subtle culture and language differences that were quite amusing.  We had a very diverse roster with players from Georgia, Florida, Texas, Missouri, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and all across Canada.  It was a very interesting cross section of culture and we all had our fun jeering one another.      

SCB: What was your reaction when your team won the Presidents' Trophy for your league?

BS: It was awesome.  Our team had our eye on that trophy from the get go, so when we achieved our goal it was very fulfilling.  It's always nice to celebrate with the guys you have been playing, practicing and living with. 
 
SCB: How did you and the Red Sox team do in the WMBL playoffs?

BS: We rolled through the playoffs quite easily. We swept the first two playoff series winning by considerable margins.  The final series was much more competitive. We won the first two games by one run in front of our great fans in Regina, then we traveled to Medicine Hat where we lost the potential series clinching game three, before winning another close game and dog piling in game four. 

SCB: What is one thing you are really going to take away from your experience playing with the Red Sox team in Canada?

BS: Playing with some older guys at the tail end of their careers, it was great to see how much they cherished every game they had left.  It is something that I hope to do a better job of moving into what may be my last baseball season.  The team environment was also great in that we had unrivaled confidence, which other teams could sense.  Finally, the organization and my host family were awesomely hospitable and made my time off the field incredible as well.  Canada is awesome!   

SCB: What are some of your goals for this upcoming season with the Broncos?

BS: I really want to win this year.  I have been here for three years and we haven't been very competitive in league play.  This year I hope to help lead our team into contention for the WCC Championship and I think we have the talent and chemistry to make a legitimate run. 

SCB: Do you have any plans for what you are going to do when you graduate? Would like to continue your baseball career on a professional team?

BS: I don't have any plans yet, and that's exciting.  I really don't know where I will be in a year from now, but I am excited to see where this year takes me.  I would love to continue my baseball career and play professionally, whether it be in the U.S. or internationally.
