Broncos Fall to SJSU, Look to Claim Series Tomorrow

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - In the only home game of a three-game set with cross-town rival San Jose State, the Broncos fell to the Spartans 9-1 to even the series 1-1. Santa Clara fell to 7-8 on the season, while the Spartans improved to 4-10. Santa Clara and SJSU will meet tomorrow at Municipal Stadium at 1 p.m. for the final game of the series. 

Santa Clara starter Chris Mendoza (2-1) was tabbed with the loss, allowing four runs - two earned - on five hits in just three innings of work. Kert Woods tallied the lone RBI for Santa Clara in the bottom of the seventh.

David Wayne Russo (2-2) picked up the win for the Spartans by pitching seven innings while allowing one run on seven hits, striking out two and walking a pair. Sheldon Daquioag drove in a pair of runs and five other Spartans drove in a run.

San Jose State got on the board in the first frame. With two outs, Nick Schulz hit a blooper to right field that took an odd bounce and allowed Matt Lopez to score.

Russo allowed a hit in the bottom of the first, but kept the Broncos off the board.

In the second, Sheldon Daquioag provided a walk to begin the inning for the Spartans. Matt Carroll singled up the middle before Ricky Acosta bunted for a base knock. On Acosta's bunt, Mendoza committed an error throwing to first that allowed Daquqioag to score and moved Acosta and Carroll to second and third, respectively. Andre Mercurio added to the Spartans' lead with a groundout that scored Carroll from third. Entering the bottom of the second, San Jose State held a 3-0 advantage. 

San Jose State continued to add to its lead  in the third. Daquioag hit a sacrifice fly with one out to extend the Spartan advantage to 4-0. 

Mendoza was lifted in favor of D.J. Zapata in the top of the fourth inning. Zapata surrendered a single to Acosta to start the frame. Dane Lund moved Acosta over with a sacrifice bunt. Mercurio laid down a bunt that Greg Harisis barehanded and tossed it to Braff who applied the tag. However, the bunt did move Acosta to third. Matt Lopez added to the Spartans' lead with a RBI single. Peter Summerville ended the inning by gunning down Lopez who was trying to steal second. 

In the fifth inning, Evan Brisentine replaced Zapata and surrendered a RBI triple to Jacob Valdez followed by a RBI single by Carroll. After five-and-a-half innings, the Spartans had a 7-0 lead. 

San Jose State took advantage of a Santa Clara error in the seventh inning to stretch its lead to 9-0.

The Broncos scored a run in the bottom of the frame. Kert Woods hit a RBI single to put the Broncos on the board. 

The Broncos were unable to add any more runs and fell to San Jose State 9-1.

GAME NOTES: First pitch was at 1:03 p.m. ... Chris Heckert replaced Brisentine on the mound in the seventh innning ... C.J. Jacobe pinch hit for Drew Ozanne in the eighth inning ... Kenny Treadwell pitched the ninth inning for the Broncos ... Zach Looney replaced Summerville behind the dish, entering the game as a pinch hitter. He later had a single in the bottom of the ninth.
