SAN JOSE, Calif. – Looking for the series win, Santa Clara baseball beat San Jose State by a final of 2-1 in the series-finale. With the win Santa Clara is now 8-8 while San Jose State is 4-11.

The Broncos return to the field on Tues., March 12 vs. Cal at Schott Stadium before hosting a three game set over the weekend vs. Michigan State.

Tommy Nance (2-1, 1.29) was brilliant in the start for the Broncos. He picked up a win while throwing 8.0-plus innings of one-run ball on one hit with two walks and seven strikeouts. At one point, Nance retired 15 straight Spartans. Max Deering (1-1, 2.41) picked up his second save of the season. The offense was led by Greg Harisis who was 1-2 with a double and a RBI. Casey Munoz collected one RBI as well while Justin Viele and Drew Ozanne each scored a run.

D.J. Slaton (0-3, 2.88) made the start for San Jose State and went 6.0 innings in the loss. Slaton allowed two runs on three hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Jacob Valdez went 1-4 with the only Spartan RBI and Andre Mercurio scored the lone run while going 0-3. Sheldon Daquiog collected the only other San Jose State hit while going 1-4.

Santa Clara jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Viele drew a walk and D. Ozanne singled to put runners on second and third. Harisis laid down a sacrifice bunt that put both runners in scoring position. Munoz followed with a RBI ground out to second.

San Jose State tried to answer in the bottom of the frame when Mercurio reached on an error to start things off and stole second. After an out, Tim Quiery was hit by a pitch to put two on but Nance was able to get out of the jam unscathed.

The Broncos had two base runners in the top of the second but Peter Summerville was thrown out attempting to steal after a leadoff single and T.J. Braff was stranded after drawing a one out walk.

Daquiog led off the home half of the second with a single to left but was promptly erased on a double play. It was the last base runner the Spartans would have until the eighth as Nance retired 15 straight.

Santa Clara added to its lead in the top of the seventh to make the score 2-0. D. Ozanne led off the inning with a walk and Harisis knocked him in with a double to left field. Harisis tried to extend the double into a triple but was thrown out after a run down.

Nance's streak of 15 in a row set down ended in the bottom of the eighth when Matt Carroll drew a one out walk. Acosta followed with the second walk of the day for San Jose State. Michael Gerlach came in to pinch hit for Dane Lund and struck out swinging while Carroll was gunned down at third attempting to steal to end the inning.

After a 1-2-3 top of the ninth, Mercurio was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the inning. Nance was lifted for Max Deering who got the first out on a grounder that moved Mercurio to second. Quiery walked to put the tying run on base with just one out. Deering got Nick Schulz to fly out for the second out but Valdez singled to right to cut the Bronco lead in half at 2-1 and move the tying run into scoring position. Deering was able to close out the game on a fielder's choice to give Santa Clara the game and series.
