Broncos Drop Two Games on the Road to Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. – In its second doubleheader in five days, Santa Clara baseball was swept by Portland by finals of 2-1 in 10 innings and 10-3. The losses put Santa Clara at 8-17 overall and 0-5 in West Coast Conference action while Portland is now 10-16 and 3-2 in conference play.

After a day off tomorrow, the two teams wrap-up the series on Sat., March 30 at 1 p.m.

Game 1

Mike Couch (3-4, 3.07) picked up the hard-luck loss while throwing 9.2 innings in the start. Couch allowed two runs on seven hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Justin Viele led the offense by going 2-4 with a walk and a run scored. Zach Looney was 2-3 with a double and a walk while Casey Munoz and T.J. Braff added a hit each.

Travis Radke (1-3, 3.48) started for Portland and threw 6.0 innings while allowing one run on five hits with four walks and nine strikeouts. Colin Feldtman (1-0, 2.08) picked up the win while throwing 4.0 innings of one-hit shutout relief. Cody Lenahan was 2-4 with a run scored while Kramer Scott was 1-4 with a RBI. Beau Fraser was 1-2 with three walks, including the game-ending walk in the bottom of the 10th.

Santa Clara continued its trend of scoring early and took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to Viele. Viele singled through the left side to lead off the game and moved to second on a wild pitch. After a strikeout of Greg Harisis, Casey Munoz grounded out to short and advanced Viele to third. Another wild pitch brought the Bronco shortstop home for the first run of the game.

The Broncos had a chance to pad their lead in the fourth when Braff led off with a single up the middle and was sacrificed over to second. Looney followed with a single of his own to put runners on the corners and Kyle DeMerritt loaded the bases when he reached on an error. Stephen Takahashi came up and hit into a double play to end the threat.

Portland struck in the top of the fourth when Lenahan doubled to right to start the home half of the inning. He moved to third on a passed ball. After a strikeout and a walk, Scott singled to center to tie the game and put runners on the corners. Couch got a double play ball to escape with just one run coming across.

Pitching took over until the bottom of the 10th when Ryan Barr doubled down the right field line with one out. After Jeff Melby was intentionally walked, Couch was lifted for Max Deering. A wild pitch moved both runners up and Kevin Farley was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Fraser came to the plate and drew his third walk of the game to force in the winning run.

Game 2

Jake Steffens (0-2, 8.44) started and picked up a loss for Santa Clara in 3.2 innings. Steffens allowed four runs on five hits with a walk and a strikeout. Three Broncos collected two hits and four others added one hit each. Braff was 2-4, DeMerritt was 2-3 and Kert Woods was 2-3 with a run scored and a walk.

B Sahlinger (1-1, 2.86) lasted 3.1 innings in the start while picking up a no-decision. Sahlinger allowed two runs on four hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Chad Kjemhus (1-0, 5.68) picked up the win in one inning of relief. Brian Frattali and Grubb each had three hits and a run scored. Frattali added a RBI while Ben Grubb had two RBI and a double. Melby was 2-5 with three RBI and a double while Barr was 2-4 with two runs scored.

The Pilots scored first in the bottom of the third and took a short-lived 1-0 lead. Barr singled to center with one out. After Melby popped out Lenahan doubled down the left field line to score Barr.

Santa Clara answered in the top of the fourth to take the lead. Perry doubled to center with one out and Munoz knocked him in with a single to center. Braff followed with a single to left to put runners on the corners with one down and, after a pitching change, Peter Summerville grounded out to shortstop to make the score 2-1 Broncos.

A three-spot in the bottom of the fourth put Portland back on top 4-2. After two quick outs, the Pilots loaded the bases with back-to-back singles by Frattali and Grubb and a hit by pitch by Michael Lucarelli. Barr followed with the second consecutive hit by pitch to bring in the first run of the inning and end the day for Steffens. Kenny Treadwell came in and allowed a RBI single to Melby before getting the third out.

Woods and Viele led off the top of the fifth with consecutive singles and Matt Ozanne laid down a sac bunt to put both runners in scoring position. Harisis grounded out to second base to bring in a run for the Broncos.

Fraser led off the bottom of the fifth with a hit by pitch and was promptly moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After a groundout, Frattali singled to right center to bring in Fraser and put Portland back on top by two at 5-3.

Portland put up five runs on five hits, including three doubles, in the bottom of the seventh to put the Pilots up 10-3 and seal the sweep of the doubleheader.
