Meet the Future of Bronco Baseball: Luke Huerta

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Continuing to introduce the next wave of talent, Santa Clara baseball introduces Luke Huerta of Castro Valley, Calif. Huerta attended Castro Valley High School where he was coached by Mario Iglesias.

"I chose Santa Clara after meeting the coaching staff and learning about the philosophy of the baseball program," said Huerta. "I like the old school feel and had a great time on the office visit weekend with my future teammates. The academics, campus and facilities are awesome and I'm looking forward to being a Bronco."

Over the course of the 2011 and 2012 seasons, Huerta's teams posted a 32-18 overall record. The team made two consecutive Division 1 NCS Appearances and were league champions in 2011. Huerta was a three-year letter winner as a starting middle infielder.

As a junior he was a member of team Northern California, played in the National Team Identification Series and was a member of USA Baseball (NTIS). In 2012 he was the Tournament MVP at the East Bay High School All-Star Showdown.

He hit .384 in league play as a junior. As a sophomore Huerta hit .362 with a .984 fielding percentage.

Huerta is also a career scholar athlete with a 3.87 GPA.

Off the field, Huerta won the Principal's Award while posting a perfect GPA for six consecutive semesters. Huerta also took park in the CVHS Renaissance Program for students with a 3.5 GPA or higher and was a Gold Recipient. He won the Hispanic Students Academic Award in June of 2012 and was a member of the California Scholarship Federation. Huerta was also a member of the Transfiguration Catholic Church where he completed personal growth and outreach projects f community service through the Catholic Social Teaching Program.

Huerta's brother Justin plays baseball at San Jose State. His uncle, Tim Santich, played basketball at Chapman and his grandfather Michael Santich played baseball at USF.

He enjoys playing football in his free time.
