SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Looking to avoid the sweep, Santa Clara baseball fell to San Diego by a final score of 6-3. The Broncos are now 9-28 overall and 0-15 in conference while the Toreros are 24-15 and 9-6 in WCC action.

The Broncos return to the field on Tues., April 23 at 6 p.m. for a matchup with UC Davis at Schott Stadium.

Powell Fansler (0-1, 3.38) started for Santa Clara and picked up a loss in 4.1 innings. Fansler allowed three runs on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts. The offense was led by Justin Gisch who was 2-2 with a home run. Greg Harisis was 2-4 with a double and a RBI while Casey Munoz added a RBI and a run scored.

P.J. Conlon (6-0, 1.43) started for San Diego and got a win in 6.2 shutout innings. Conlon allowed five hits with no walks and nine strikeouts. Trevor Bayless (2-2, 1.11) picked up his third save of the year. The offense was led by A.J. Robinson who was 3-4 with a walk, a double and a RBI. Chris Woolley was 1-2 with two RBI while Lucas Hagberg was 2-5 with two runs scored.

Justin Viele got the Broncos started in the bottom of the first with a single to left field. Zach Looney went down swinging but Viele swiped second on the third strike to move into scoring position for the middle of the order. Viele advanced to third on a fly ball to right but Harisis went down on a check swing strikeout for the final out.

Hagberg singled through the left side leading off the fourth inning. After a fly out to right, Andrew Daniel singled through the left side. Both runners moved up on a fly ball to center and came in to score on a first-pitch single up the middle for Woolley. Austin Green followed with a single of his own up the middle and after a wild pitch advanced both runners, Robinson walked on a 3-2 pitch to load the bases. The count ran full to Louie Lechich who went down swinging to end the inning.

With one out in the top of the fifth, Hagberg singled to left and Dillon Haupt doubled to left to end the day for Fansler. Kenny Treadwell came in to pitch and Daniel hit a sac fly to center to make the score 3-0 before the third out was recorded on a soft liner to short by Conor Joe.

Kris Bryant hit his third home run of the weekend off Chris Mendoza leading off the seventh inning. Bryant homer went off the batter's eye just to the right of dead center. Haupt struck out swinging but reached when the third strike got away from Peter Summerville. After the second out was recorded Joe walked to put runners on first and second. Mendoza fell behind Logan Davis 2-0 and was lifted for Nick Medeiros who lost Davis to load the bases. Medeiros came back to get the third out on a called strike three.

Harisis started the home half of the seventh with a single through the right side. With DeMerritt at the plate and one down, Harisis moved to second on a pitch in the dirt. Max MacNabb came in to pitch

Robinson doubled down the left field line against new Santa Clara pitcher Max Deering. Lechich sacrificed the runner to third and Bryant was intentionally walked to put runners on the corners. Hagberg tried to laid down a squeeze but Deering was able to get the out at home on a nice block of the plate by Summerville. Zach Looney moved behind the plate and Drew Ozanne came in to play third when Deering was taken out for Jake Steffens. Summerville was taken out of the game. Steffens got the third out on a called strike three.

Gisch came in to pinch hit for D. Ozanne leading off the bottom of the eighth and hit his first career homerun way over the batting cages in left. Pinch hitter Ben Wright was hit by a pitch and Matt Ozanne came in to pinch run. MacNabb fell behind Viele 2-1 and was lifted for Sheldon Ekstrand. Ekland got two outs, the second being a sac bunt by Looney that put Ozanne on second. Munoz came through with a RBI base hit on a chopper up the middle to make the score 4-2. Harisis cut the deficit to one with a double off the wall in left center. Ekland was replaced by Trevor Bayless on the mound who got the third out on a called strike three.

New Santa Clara pitcher D.J. Zapata walked Daniel leading off the ninth. A hit and run by Davis put runners on the corners with one out. Dillon Checkal pinch hit for Green and Peter Hendron was summoned from the bullpen. Checkal laid down a bunt to add an insurance run and make the score 5-3. Robinson hit a RBI single up the middle and ended the inning when he tried to advance to second.

Gisch singled in with two down in the ninth but pinch hitter Mac Hess grounded out to end the game.
