Santa Clara Drops Road Game to UC Davis

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – In a back and forth game, Santa Clara baseball fell to UC Davis by a final score of 11-9. The Broncos are now 10-32 overall while the Aggies are 16-26.

The Broncos return to the field on Fri., May 3 at 6 p.m. vs. Gonzaga in the final home series of the year.

Tommy Nance (2-2, 4.66) started for Santa Clara and got a no-decision in 3.0 innings. Nance allowed three runs, two earned, on three hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Kenny Treadwell (1-2, 3.86) got the loss in 0.2 innings out of the bullpen. The offense was led by Casey Munoz who was 2-4 with his first career home run, a walk, two runs scored and two RBI and Zach Looney who was 3-4 with a walk and two runs scored.

Robert Parucha (3-1, 4.32) started for Davis and got a no-decision in 3.2 innings. Parucha allowed five runs, four earned, on eight hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Max Cordy (5-5, 3.77) got the win in 2.1 innings out of the bullpen. The offense was led by Cameron Olson who was 3-3 with a walk and two runs scored and Steven Patterson who was 2-4 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI.

Santa Clara jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second. Munoz singled to shortstop to lead off the inning and was followed by a bunt single by Looney. Jose Vizcaino Jr. hit the third consecutive single and an error by the second baseman let two runs come in and put Vizcaino on second. With two down Vizcaino moved to third on a wild pitch and Greg Harisis singled up the middle to knock in the third run of the inning.

The Aggies tied the game with a run in the bottom of the second and two in the bottom of the third. In the second Patterson singled and moved to third on two passed balls before coming home on a ground out. Tino Lipson walked with one down and moved to second on a wild pitch with two down. Paul Politi doubled in Lipson and scored on a single by Nick Lynch.

The Broncos jumped back on top with two runs in the top of the fourth. With Harisis on second and Matt Ozanne on third, Justin Gisch whacked a double to right field to put Santa Clara on top 5-3.

Davis scored three in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead for the first time. Olson led off with a single to right and Kevin Barker was hit by a pitch. After a wild pitch and a passed ball allowed the first run to come in, Adam Young walked to put runners on the corners. Lipson hit a RBI fielder's choice and stole second before coming in to score on a RBI single up the middle by John Williams.

Santa Clara scored an unearned run in the top of the fifth to tie the score at 6-6 but the Aggies went back on top by two with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings.

The Broncos were able to tie the game yet again with two runs in the top of the eighth. Gisch walked with one out and Munoz blasted a home run to left to make the scored 8-8.

A three-spot in the bottom of the eighth put Davis ahead for good. Williams led off by reaching on a throwing error and Politi reached on an error by Justin Viele at short. Patterson doubled in both runs and moved to third on a fly ball before coming in to score on a RBI single to center by Izaak Silva.

Stephen Takahashi singled in a run in the top of the ninth to get the Broncos within two but Davis was able to close out the win.
