Bronco Baseball Hosts Senior Day Sunday at 1 PM

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – In its final weekend of home games of the season, Santa Clara baseball travels to UC Davis on Tues., April 30 at 2:30 p.m. before welcoming Gonzaga to Schott Stadium. The Broncos and Bulldogs will play Fri., May 3 at 6 p.m., Sat., May 4 at 3 p.m. and Sun., May 5 at 1 p.m. The Saturday game will be video only with no audio broadcast.

Last week Santa Clara fell had a walk-off win vs. UC Davis in 10 innings before being swept by Saint Mary's on the road. The Broncos are now 10-31 overall with a 0-18 mark in West Coast Conference play.

"This year's senior class put a lot of time and effort into leading this team and changing the direction of the program," said Santa Clara head coach Dan O'Brien. "It's obviously been a rough year, but I appreciate the senior class and their willingness and effort to the lead the program."

The Aggies enter the week with a 15-26 overall record and a 4-15 mark on the road. They opened their season by taking three of four from Washington and taking down San Jose State. Davis took one game at Oklahoma State and was swept by No. 21 Cal Poly. The Aggies have also faced No. 4 Cal State Fullerton and were swept in a three-game series. On March 26 they took down Stanford 2-1 at home. Last week Davis fell to Santa Clara and was swept by No. 21 UC Irvine on the road.

The Zags are 28-14-1 on the season with a 15-6 mark in the WCC, which puts them in first place. Gonzaga fell to No. 6 Oregon State in the third game of the season but topped No. 2 Arkansas 3-0 on March 1. The Bulldogs' tie came to No. 24 Arizona State 6-6 on March 3. They took two of three from No. 25 San Diego in the second weekend of conference play. Last week they took the first two from BYU at home before falling in the finale.

Santa Clara is 41-26-1 all-time vs. UC Davis. Casey Munoz smoked a double to left field with two on in the bottom of the 10th on April 23 to give the Broncos the win over the Aggies.

The Broncos are 38-37 all-time vs. Gonzaga. Last year Santa Clara went up to Spokane where it was swept by the Zags in a three-game series.

Santa Clara has a team ERA of 5.77 in 369.2 innings. The pitching staff has allowed 453 hits and 150 walks while striking out 226. Opponents are hitting .308 off of Bronco pitchers.

Mike Couch (3-7, 4.56) has been the Friday night starter for Santa Clara and had his best outing vs. San Jose State on March 8. Couch threw a complete game shutout with five strikeouts. Couch leads the team with 79.0 innings pitched and has struck out a team-high 43 batters with 33 walks while allowing 79 hits.

Max Deering (1-2, 4.70) has been the first choice coming in from the bullpen. Deering has thrown 51.2 innings over 28 appearances, including one start, and struck out 36 batters against just 15 walks. He is tied with D.J. Zapata for the team lead with two saves.

Reece Karalus (0-7, 7.40) has shown improvement as the season has progressed. Karalus has made 16 appearances and nine starts, covering 48.2 innings. He has struck out 43 batters while walking just 16. His 2.7 strikeout to walk ratio is tops on the team. Against the high-powered San Diego offense on April 19, Karalus went 7.0-plus innings while allowing just three hits and two earned runs with five strikeouts. Karalus has also picked up one save.

Chris Mendoza (2-2, 4.89) stepped up out of the bullpen in the first game of the double header vs. Michigan State on March 16. Mendoza threw 5.0 innings of one-run ball to save the bullpen. Mendoza has thrown 42.1 innings over 19 appearances and five starts.

Kenny Treadwell (1-1, 3.98) leads the team in ERA while playing the biggest role of his Bronco career as a junior. Treadwell has appeared in 19 games while throwing a career-high 20.1 innings. He has fanned eight batters while walking seven.

Santa Clara is hitting .250 as a team with a .332 on-base percentage and a .331 slugging percentage. The Broncos have hit 51 doubles, 10 triples and 14 home runs while scoring 183 runs and stealing 59 bags in 79 attempts.

Greg Harisis leads Santa Clara in hitting with a .314 (43-137) batting average. He has added eight doubles, one triple, two homers, 21 runs scored, 24 RBI and a team-best 11 stole bases. His 18 walks and five hit-by-pitch put his on-base percentage at a terrific .410.

Newcomer Casey Munoz has started all 41 games for Santa Clara and is hitting .301 (49-163) with a team-high nine doubles, one triple, 14 runs scored and is tied for the team-lead with 24 RBI. Matt Ozanne is third on the Broncos with 19 RBI while hitting .248 (31-125) and scoring 20 runs. Justin Viele leads the Broncos with 25 walks, while hitting .282 (46-163) and posting a .392 OBP. He has scored a team-best 28 runs and driven in 16 while hitting five doubles, three triples and two home runs with a 10 stolen bases in 11 attempts.

Quinton Perry, who will miss the rest of the season due to injury, leads the team with five home runs. Perry hit .291 (25-86) with a .364 on-base percentage. He clubbed six doubles to put his slugging percentage at a team-best .535.

Nick Lynch leads the team in hitting with a .359 (46-128) batting average. Lynch has scored 18 runs to go with 23 RBI. He has slugged six doubles, one triple and two homers.

Steven Patterson is hitting .336 (51-152) with two bombs and nine doubles. He has 27 RBI and has scored 25 runs.

Paul Politi leads the team with five home runs and 32 runs scored. Politi is hitting .280 (47-168) while adding 10 doubles and a triple for a .440 slugging percentage. He has also taken a team-best 20 walks to post a .370 OBP.

Harry Stanwyck (3-5. 5.07) leads the Aggies in innings pitched with 30.1 over 11 starts. He has a team-high 31 strikeouts against 24 walks.

Max Cordy (4-5, 3.14) leads Davis in wins and has a team-best six saves. In 19 appearances out of the bullpen, Cordy has tossed 28.2 innings while striking out 13 and walking 16.

Marco Gonzales leads the team with a .333 (46-138) batting average. Gonzales has scored 13 runs and driven in 23 while hitting six doubles.

Cory Lebrun is hitting .322 (47-146) with eight doubles and two triples. Lebrun has scored 22 runs and driven in 24 while swiping five bases.

Mitchell Gunsolus is the only Zag to start all 43 games and is hitting .293 (48-164). Gunsolus leads the team with 30 runs scored and has added 16 RBI, six doubles and a team-best five triples. He also leads the team with 31 walks to put his OBP at .416 to lead the team.

Tyler Olson (8-2, 2.25) leads the Zags in ERA and is tied for the conference lead in wins. Over 12 games, 11 starts, Olson has thrown a conference-high 80.0 innings while fanning a team-best 69 against 26 walks. He has five complete games, one shutout and one save. 

Gonzales (6-2, 2.77) has been even more impressive on the mound than with the bat in 2013. Over 12 appearances that includes 11 starts, Gonzales has thrown 78.0 innings and one complete game shutout while also picking up a save. He has struck out 66 against 16 walks.
