Weekly Game Notes

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Playing its final home game of the 2013 season, Santa Clara baseball hosts Pacific on Tues., May 7 at 6 p.m. before hitting the road for a three-game set at Cincinnati Friday through Sunday. The game times will be 5p.m., 1 p.m. and 10 a.m. Pacific.

Last week Santa Clara fell at UC Davis in in a back and forth game before being swept by Gonzaga at Schott Stadium. The Broncos are now 10-35 overall with a 0-21 mark in West Coast Conference play.

Santa Clara is 79-41 all-time vs. Pacific. Earlier this year Kenny Treadwell picked up his first career win with 2.2 innings of one-hit relief against the Tigers while D.J. Zapata got his second save of the year with a perfect ninth. The offense was led by Justin Viele who was 2-5 with a triple, a run scored and two RBI. Zach Looney was 2-5 with a run scored while Kyle DeMerritt went 2-3 with a double, a triple, two runs scored and a RBI.

The Broncos have never played Cincinnati.

The Tigers are 11-31 entering their match-up with the Broncos, including 2-18 on the road. Pacific took one of three from San Jose State to open the season. The Tigers also have wins over Arkansas, Gonzaga and TCU. The lone series win of the season came vs. Long Beach State April 5-7. Last week Pacific dropped two of three vs. Hawaii.

The Bearcats enter the week with a record of 18-29 and a 14-12 mark at home. They dropped their first five games of the season before taking down West Carolina 7-6 in 10 innings at the First Pitch Invitational in Greenville, S.C. Last week Cincinnati was swept at home by Seton Hall.

Santa Clara has a team ERA of 5.77 in 405.2 innings. The pitching staff has allowed 491 hits and 162 walks while striking out 247. Opponents are hitting .304 off of Bronco pitchers.

Mike Couch (3-8, 4.70) has been the Friday night starter for Santa Clara and had his best outing vs. San Jose State on March 8. Couch threw a complete game shutout with five strikeouts. Couch leads the team with 88.0 innings pitched and has struck out 46 batters with 34 walks while allowing 89 hits. Couch has thrown three complete games in 2013.

Max Deering (2-4, 4.61) has been the first choice coming in from the bullpen. Deering has thrown 52.2 innings over 30 appearances, including one start, and struck out 36 batters against just 15 walks. He is tied with D.J. Zapata for the team lead with two saves. 

Reece Karalus (0-7, 6.91) has shown improvement as the season has progressed. Karalus has made 17 appearances and 10 starts, covering 56.0 innings. He has struck out a team-high 49 batters while walking just 19. His 2.6 strikeout to walk ratio is tops on the team. Against the high-powered San Diego offense on April 19, Karalus went 7.0-plus innings while allowing just three hits and two earned runs with five strikeouts. Karalus has also picked up one save.

Chris Mendoza (2-2, 4.47) stepped up out of the bullpen in the first game of the double header vs. Michigan State on March 16. Mendoza threw 5.0 innings of one-run ball to save the bullpen. Mendoza has thrown 48.1 innings over 22 appearances and five starts. He has struck out 31 batters, two off his career-high.

Kenny Treadwell (1-2, 4.22) leads the team in ERA while playing the biggest role of his Bronco career as a junior. Treadwell has appeared in 21 games while throwing a career-high 21.1 innings. He has fanned eight batters so far in 2013.

Santa Clara is hitting .249 as a team with a .332 on-base percentage and a .328 slugging percentage. The Broncos have hit 56 doubles, 10 triples and 15 home runs while scoring 200 runs and stealing 62 bags in 85 attempts.

Greg Harisis is second on Santa Clara in hitting with a .307 (47-153) batting average. He has added eight doubles, one triple, two homers, 2 runs scored, 25 RBI and a team-best 12 stole bases. His 21 walks and five hit-by-pitch put his on-base percentage at a terrific .406. Harisis has been a versatile defender as well. He has seen time at second base, third base, center field and played his first innings at shortstop on senior day vs. Gonzaga on May 5.

Newcomer Casey Munoz has started all 45 games for Santa Clara and is leading the team with a .313 (56-179) average with a team-high 10 doubles, one triple, one home run, 17 runs scored and leads the team with 28 RBI. Matt Ozanne is third on the Broncos with 20 RBI while hitting .248 (34-137) and scoring 21 runs. Justin Viele leads the Broncos with 25 walks, while hitting .268 (48-179) and posting a .380 OBP. He has scored a team-best 28 runs and driven in 16 while hitting five doubles, three triples and two home runs with a 10 stolen bases in 12 attempts.

Quinton Perry, who will miss the rest of the season due to injury, leads the team with five home runs. Perry hit .291 (25-86) with a .364 on-base percentage. He clubbed six doubles to put his slugging percentage at a team-best .535.

Erik Lockwood leads Pacific with a .309 (47-152) batting average. Lockwood has a team-high 12 doubles with one home run, 17 RBI and 17 runs scored.

Tyler Sullivan is hitting .308 (45-146) with a team-best 32 runs scored. Sullivan has knocked in 13 runs with 10 doubles, two triples and one home run while swiping a team-high nine bases in 13 attempts.

John Haberman (1-5, 5.87) leads the team in innings pitched with 53.2 over 14 appearances, including eight starts. Haberman has struck out 33 while walking 14 and allowing 76 hits.

Cory Popham (2-1, 2.14) leads the team in ERA and is tied for the team-lead in wins. Popham has appeared in six games, all starts, and tossed 33.2 innings. He struck out 15 and walked 14.

Michael Benson (2-4, 4.30) has started eight games and thrown 52.1 innings. Benson has struck out 17 and walked 13.

Ian Happ leads Cincinnati in hitting with a .327 (56-171) batting average. Happ has a team-high 13 doubles and five home runs to go with one triple. He leads the team in RBI with 32 and runs scored with 32. Happ has swiped a team-best 17 bags in 21 attempts while taking 41 walks. He has an OBP of .458 and a slugging percentage of .503.

Matt Williams is hitting .315 (41-130) with eight doubles and one home run to go along with 21 runs scored and 18 RBI. Williams has drawn 22 walks to put his OBP at .412 which has helped him steal eight bases in 11 attempts.

Bryan Chenoweth (2-4, 3.45) has appeared in 18 games, all out of the bullpen. Chenoweth has thrown 31.1 innings while striking out 25 and walking six. He has picked up two saves.

Connor Walsh (1-4, 4.77) has started a team-high 12 games while throwing a team-leading 54. 2 innings. His 43 strikeouts leads the team, as does his 38 walks.

Andrew Strenge (1-6, 5.67) has picked up a team-best eight saves in 18 appearances that include four starts. Strenge has thrown 33.1 innings with 35 strikeouts and 11 walks. His ERA is inflated from allowing six home runs.
