SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Playing its final games of the 2013 season, Santa Clara baseball visits Stanford on Tues., May 14 at 6 p.m. before traveling south for a matchup with LMU Friday through Sunday. The game times will be 3 p.m., 2 p.m. and 1 p.m.

Last week Santa Clara fell in the final home game of the season to future West Coast Conference opponent Pacific and dropped the first of a three-game series at Cincinnati. The Broncos bounced back to take the next two from the Bearcats and win the series.

"We took two of three in Cincinnati because we were able to put it together on all ends," said Santa Clara assistant coach Keith Beauregard. "When we needed a big hit, we got it. When we needed a big pitch, we got it. We made all the plays defensively. When we've done that this season, we've been a team that's tough to beat. Putting together a complete game is not easy but when we do we reap the benefits. This weekend was us playing our style of ball and executing our game plan."

Santa Clara is 162-191-7 all-time vs. Stanford. Earlier this season the Cardinal came to Schott on March 5 and left with a 6-4 win. Kyle DeMerritt was 2-3 with two runs scored to lead the Santa Clara offense.

The Broncos are 86-76 all-time vs. LMU. Last season the Lions came to the Mission campus on the final weekend of the regular season and took two of three. The Bronco win came in the middle game by a final of 7-6. Santa Clara was led by Quinton Perry who was 3-4 with a home run and two RBI.

The Cardinal enter the midweek game with a 26-20 overall record and a 15-11 mark at home. They opened the season at Rice by dropping two of three but bounced back with a nine-game winning streak. Last week Stanford was swept by Oregon State. The team has a five-game losing streak.

The Lions enter the week with a 22-25 overall record and a 10-11 mark in WCC action. They have beaten No. 14 Oregon on the road and No. 26 Oklahoma State on the road. LMU took two of three from both No. 21 Gonzaga and No. 23 San Diego at home. The Lions visited No. 17 UCLA and came away with a win in three games and beat No. 5 Cal State Fullerton 3-2 on March 26. Last week they dropped two of three to BYU.

Santa Clara has a team ERA of 5.60 in 440.2 innings. The pitching staff has allowed 521 hits and 175 walks while striking out 266. Opponents are hitting .299 off of Bronco pitchers.

Mike Couch (4-8, 4.45) has been a steady starter for Santa Clara and had his best outing vs. San Jose State on March 8. Couch threw a complete game shutout with five strikeouts. Last weekend he tossed 7.0 one-run innings at Cincinnati while picking up the win. Couch leads the team with 95.0 innings pitched and has struck out 48 batters with 34 walks while allowing 95 hits. Couch has thrown three complete games in 2013.

Max Deering (2-4, 5.56) has been the first choice coming in from the bullpen. Deering has thrown 55.0 innings over 32 appearances, including one start, and struck out 38 batters against just 16 walks. His. 2.4 strikeout to walk ratio is tops on the team. He is tied with D.J. Zapata for the team lead with two saves.

Reece Karalus (0-8, 6.53) has shown improvement as the season has progressed. Karalus has made 18 appearances and 11 starts, covering 62.0 innings. He has struck out a team-high 51 batters while walking 22. Against the high-powered San Diego offense on April 19, Karalus went 7.0-plus innings while allowing just three hits and two earned runs with five strikeouts. Karalus has also picked up one save.

Chris Mendoza (2-2, 4.15) stepped up out of the bullpen in the first game of the double header vs. Michigan State on March 16. Mendoza threw 5.0 innings of one-run ball to save the bullpen. Mendoza leads the team in ERA and has thrown 52.0 innings over 24 appearances and five starts. He has struck out a career-high 38 batters.

Kenny Treadwell (1-2, 4.22) has played the biggest role of his Bronco career as a junior. Treadwell has appeared in 21 games while throwing a career-high 21.1 innings. He has fanned eight batters so far in 2013.

Santa Clara is hitting .250 as a team with a .332 on-base percentage and a .329 slugging percentage. The Broncos have hit 62 doubles, 11 triples and 16 home runs while scoring 213 runs and stealing 66 bags in 92 attempts.

Greg Harisis is second on Santa Clara in hitting with a .293 (49-167) batting average. He has added nine doubles, one triple, two homers, 27 runs scored, 25 RBI and a team-best 13 stole bases. His 25 walks and five hit-by-pitch put his on-base percentage at a terrific .399. Harisis has been a versatile defender as well. He has seen time at second base, third base, center field and played his first innings at shortstop on senior day vs. Gonzaga on May 5.

Newcomer Casey Munoz has started all 49 games for Santa Clara and is leading the team with a .323 (63-195) average with a team-high 10 doubles, one triple, one home run, 19 runs scored and leads the team with 30 RBI. Matt Ozanne is third on the Broncos with 21 RBI while hitting .245 (37-151) and scoring 21 runs. Justin Viele leads the Broncos with 27 walks, while hitting .258 (50-194) and posting a .372 OBP. He has scored a team-best 30 runs and driven in 17 while hitting seven doubles, three triples and two home runs with 11 stolen bases.

Quinton Perry, who will miss the rest of the season due to injury, leads the team with five home runs. Perry hit .291 (25-86) with a .364 on-base percentage. He clubbed six doubles to put his slugging percentage at a team-best .535.

Justin Ringo leads Stanford in hitting with a .321 (54-168) batting average while posting a .399 OBP. Ringo has scored a team-high 34 runs while clubbing six doubles, two triples and six homers to go with 32 RBI. He also has a team-best eight stolen bases without being caught.

Brian Ragira leads the team with eight home runs and 34 RBI while hitting .314 (60-191). Ragira has scored 31 runs to go with nine doubles and a triple.

Austin Wilson has been hurt much of the year but is hitting .333 (29-87) in just 23 games. Wilson has hit five home runs and seven doubles to lead the team with a .586 slugging percentage. He has scored 20 runs and driven in 23 while swiping four bases.

Potential first overall pick Mark Appel (8-4, 1.97) leads Stanford in wins, ERA, innings (91.1), strikeouts (110), batting average against (.201), starts (12), complete games (4), shutouts (2) and strikeout to walk ratio (5.5).

Bobby Zarubin (3-2, 2.12) has appeared in 13 games for Stanford and started eight. In 51.0 innings, Zarubin has struck out 34 while walking 22 and surrendering 42 hits.

Tommy Cheek leads LMU with a .305 (43-141) batting average. Cheek has scored 11 runs and driven in 18 while hitting eight doubles and a triple.

Zac Fujimoto and David Edwards have combined to steal 29 bases in 33 attempts. Fujimoto is hitting .286 (42-147) and is a perfect 14-14 in stolen bases while Edwards in hitting .264 (39-148) while going 15-19.

Matt Florer (2-2, 1.95) leads the team in ERA while throwing 27.2 innings. In 15 games and four starts, Florer has thrown a complete game shutout while fanning 18 and walking 12.

Aaron Griffin (3-5, 2.67) leads the Lions in innings with 81.0. Griffin has started 12 games and tossed one complete game while striking out 69 and walking 18.

Bret Dahlson (2-4, 3.12) leads LMU in saved with seven. Dahlson has pitched in 21 games and thrown 26.0 innings. He has struck out 21 batters while walking 10.
