SANTA CLARA, Calif. — On the final day of the fifth annual Jack Gifford Memorial Baseball Tournament, Santa Clara baseball dropped a 9-1 contest to the Washington Huskies. The Broncos (7-10) went 1-3 on the weekend, picking up a 9-8 walkoff win in Saturday night's matchup with University of the Pacific.

Bronco sophomore Jacob Steffens (L, 0-2) — who took the hill for his fourth start of the season — pitched 3.2 innings and allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits with no walks and one strikeout.  Washington's junior starting pitcher Jeff Brigham (W, 3-0) threw five innings and allowed no runs on three hits with no walks and three strikeouts.

Senior center fielder Greg Harisis led off the first with a double to right center for the Broncos, who put runners on first and third with no outs after sophomore left fielder Kert Woods reached on an error. Santa Clara came away scoreless after a pair of strikeouts and an attempted double steal, in which the Huskies (10-4-1) threw short to second and back to home to catch Harisis stealing.

Washington junior second baseman Andrew Ely opened the scoring in the second with a two-out, two-RBI double to right to give his team a 2-0 lead. Sophomore center fielder Braden Bishop drove in the third run of the game for the Huskies with an RBI single in the fourth, and later stole third and scored on an error to make it 4-0.

Junior shortstop Erik Forgione increased the lead to five runs with a two-out, RBI double one inning later. The Huskies recorded 11 of their 14 hits with two outs. 

Senior first baseman Mac Hess led off the home half of the fifth inning with a double, and was stranded at second after two groundouts and a strikeout. He led the Broncos with two hits on the afternoon alongside senior Quinton Perry.

In the home half of the seventh, the Broncos loaded the bases on singles from the pinch hitter, Perry, and senior catcher Peter Summerville, followed by a walk from junior pinch hitter T.J. Braff. Freshman third baseman Max Kuhns stepped to the plate with two outs and lined out to center to end the inning.

Santa Clara threatned again in the eighth, as it put runners on first and second with one out. Perry came through with a hard-hit ground ball that deflected off junior third baseman Alex Schmidt's glove and into the outfield for an RBI single to make the score 6-1. 

The Broncos continue their 10-game homestand at Schott Stadium with a three-game series March 13-15 against the Penn State Nittany Lions. First pitch times are as follows:

Thursday, March 13: 6:00 p.m.

Friday, March: 14 6:00 p.m.

Saturday, March: 15 12:00 p.m.
