PALO ALTO, Calif. — The Santa Broncos lost their final non-conference game of the season 8-2 to the Stanford Cardinal at Sunken Diamond Tuesday night. The Cardinal scored seven runs in the first four innings and the Broncos managed two runs on seven hits in the loss.
In his second straight midweek start, Nick Medeiros (L, 2-1) allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts for the Broncos (22-26, 12-9 WCC) in 3.0+ innings. Freshman starter Brett Hanewich (W, 2-4) allowed one earned run on four hits with two walks and six strikeouts in 4.0 innings for the Cardinal (22-20, 9-12 Pac-12).
Stanford got on the board after a ground ball went through the legs of sophomore shortstop Jose Vizcaino, Jr. in the first, allowing freshman shortstop Tommy Edman to score from second on an error. Junior designated hitter Dominic Jose and Edman each hit RBI singles to give the Cardinal a 3-0 lead in the second.
Santa Clara recorded four hits in the first three innings, including a leadoff double in the first and a leadoff single in the third, both from senior center fielder Greg Harisis. Senior first baseman Quinton Perry hit one of his two doubles of the game to lead off the second. Harisis scored the first Bronco run on two-out, RBI single off the bat of junior left fielder and Palo Alto native T.J. Braff in the third to make the score 3-1 Stanford.
Junior left fielder Wayne Taylor hit a two-run homer to left with no outs in the fourth to put the Cardinal in front 5-1. Stanford went on to send 10 batters to the plate that inning and picked up two more runs on RBI singles from junior center fielder Austin Slater and sophomore right fielder Zach Hoffpauir.
After Perry's leadoff double in the sixth, he advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI sacrifice fly from freshman third baseman Max Kuhns. Santa Clara got four baserunners in the last three innings, two of which came from leadoff singles, and could not bring them in to score in the latter half of the game. Freshman Kevin George, junior Evan Brisentine, senior Max Deering and Kuhns combined to hold Stanford scoreless over that last four innings.
Perry reached base a team-best three times by going 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored, while Harisis went 2-for-5 with a run scored in the midweek contest.
Santa Clara returns to the diamond Thu., May 8 to begin a three game West Coast Conference series against the BYU Cougars at Miller Park in Provo, Utah. First pitch times are 5 p.m. PDT Thursday, 5 p.m. PDT Friday and 12 p.m. PDT Saturday.
