Baseball Drops Friday Night Game to BYU

PROVO, Utah — The Santa Clara Broncos dropped the second of a three-game set to the BYU Cougars 16-2 Friday night at Miller Park. The Broncos recorded three hits on the night and the Cougars scored at least one run in the second through seventh innings to even the series at one game apiece.

Santa Clara starter Peter Hendron (L, 6-4) allowed five earned runs on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts in 3.1 innings for the Broncos (23-27, 13-10 WCC). BYU starter Jeff Barker (W, 5-5) allowed one earned run on two hits with three walks and four strikeouts in 7.0 innings for the Cougars (19-29, 9-14 WCC). Freshman Max Kuhns saw time in the field and on the mound, pitching a scoreless inning with one strikeout for Santa Clara.

Senior center fielder Greg Harisis recorded two of Santa Clara's three hits for the ballgame, including a leadoff single in the first. The Broncos scored for the first time in the fifth inning when sophomore shortstop Jose Vizcaino, Jr. hit an RBI groundout to drive in sophomore right fielder Kert Woods. In the eighth, junior left fielder C.J. Jacobe drove in the second Santa Clara run of the game on an infield single in his first at-bat.

BYU recorded back-to-back home runs off the bats of senior first baseman Brock Whitney and senior right fielder Kelton Caldwell to open the scoring in the second. The Cougars scored multiple runs in five innings, including three in the fifth, three in the sixth and five on five hits in the seventh as part of their second-best offensive performace of the season.

The Broncos and Cougars return to the diamond for the series finale Saturday at 1 p.m. MDT (12 p.m. PDT). Jacob Steffens (1-4, 3.77 ERA) is scheduled to start for Santa Clara against BYU's Kolton Mahoney (5-5, 4.24 ERA).
