SANTA CLARA, Calif. — On this week's edition of the Bronco Weekly Sports Wrap, Santa Clara student-athletes Denzel Johnson and Nici Gilday recap a week in SCU sports that featured some standout performances.
Baseball opened its season at defending national champion No. 1 Vanderbilt over the weekend. The Broncos left Nashville with one victory, 7-6 in Game 1 of their Saturday doubleheader. Jose Vizcaino Jr. and Steven Wilson swept WCC Rawlings player and pitcher of the week awards.
EYEBRONCO spoke with head coach Dan O'Brien, Jake Steffens and Vizcaino about playing the top team in the country to start the season The Broncos travel to UC Davis today before coming home to Stephen Schott Stadium for the home opener vs. Cincinnati at 6 p.m. on Friday.
Men's basketball traveled the Hilltop where the team lost a tough overtime game to the Dons. They'll look to bounce back this weekend in Southern California against Pepperdine Thursday at 6 p.m. and LMU Saturday at 3 p.m. Catch both games on TheW.tv.
Women's basketball also went to overtime with San Francisco and came away with an exciting 80-79 win at Leavey Center. Gilday hit a game-winning shot late in overtime that bounced on the rim four times before falling. EYEBRONCO caught up with head coach JR Payne and Taylor Berry after the victory. Women's basketball stays at home to face Pepperdine at 7 of Thursday and then host LMU at 2 p.m. on Saturday for Senior Day.
Softball played in the Fresno State Bulldogs Invitational and picked up one win against Sacramento State. Their four losses were a by a combined five runs with one coming in extra innings. They return home for their home opener on Friday at 5:30 p.m. vs. Seattle as part of the Bronco Classic. Make sure to head out to the softball field and support the team.
Women's water polo picked up two wins on Sunday with victories over Cal Lutheran and Sonoma State at home. EYEBRONCO stopped by the Sullivan Aquatic Center to chat with goalkeeper Sydni Estrella about the weekend. The team returns to the Sullivan Aquatic Center on Saturday at 9 a.m. vs. Indiana and 4:30 p.m. vs. Cal State East Bay.
After a second place finish at the Matador Invitational, women's golf hits the links again Monday and Tuesday at the San Jose State Julie Inkster Invitational right in their back yard here in the South Bay.
The men's tennis team picked up a big 4-3 win over Fresno State at home on Saturday, rallying from a three-point deficit. EYEBRONCO caught up with Sam Bertram and Mikheil Khmiadasvhili to talk about the victory. The Broncos hit the road for two matches up in Oregon. They play Nebraska on Friday and the Ducks on Saturday.
Women's tennis also played Fresno State Saturday and could not come away with a victory. The women stay home to face Wichita State on Thursday at 2 p.m. before heading to the Central Coast to play Oregon on Saturday and UC Santa Barbara Sunday.
Men's golf opens its spring season this week at the Wailua Golf Club in the John A. Burns Intercollegiate starting Wednesday. Best of luck for the beginning of the spring season.
Track ran at the program's first ever indoor meet at the Husky Classic in Seattle last weekend. Joey Berriatua set a school record by running 8:19.78 in the 3000m race. The team returns to the track this weekend for the West Coast Challenge and West Coast Relays Feb. 21-22 in Orinda, Calif.
