Baseball Prevails 4-2 in Close Contest at Grand Canyon

PHOENIX, Ariz. — Santa Clara Baseball took a one-run lead in the fourth inning of Tuesday night's matchup against Grand Canyon, and plated two late runs in a 4-2 victory at Brazell Stadium. Starting pitcher Eric Lex earned his first career victory as the Broncos dealt the Antelopes their fifth loss in 15 home games this season.

Lex (W, 1-1) allowed an unearned run on four hits with a walk and two strikeouts in 5.0+ innings. The Antelopes (14-11) scored their only run against the Redding, Calif. native on a double play in the second inning, after two Santa Clara errors put runners on the corners with no outs. Lex retired the last seven batters he faced through the end of the fifth inning.

In the fourth inning, Jose Vizcaino, Jr. tied the game up on an RBI double down the left field line to score Grant Meylan, who led off the inning with a bunt single. Two batters later, T.J. Braff put the Broncos (10-12) ahead on an RBI fielder's choice to bring Berman home.

Antelope starter Jake Repavich (L, 4-1) allowed two earned runs on four hits with two walks and three strikeouts. The Broncos dealt Repavich the first loss of his college career Tuesday night.

Grand Canyon put runners on first and second with no outs in the sixth when Santa Clara called on Nick Medeiros to relieve Lex. In his first appearance since March 8, Medeiros recorded three straight outs to get the Broncos out of the inning with the lead. Mitchell White struck out one in a scoreless seventh and Reece Karalus recorded two strikeouts in the eighth to keep Santa Clara in the lead.

Jake Brodt hit an RBI triple in the ninth and scored on a wild pitch to extend the Bronco lead to 4-1. In the bottom half of the inning, Garrison Schwartz hit an RBI double to right before Karalus (SV, 6) got pinch hitter Brian Kraft to fly out to center for the final out of the game. Kraft represented the potential game-tying run with Schwartz at second base.

Meylan led the Broncos with two hits and Vizcaino, Jr. reached base twice with a hit and a walk alongside an RBI. Schwartz went 2-for-4 with an RBI and David Walker went 2-for-3 with a walk for Grand Canyon.
