SANTA CLARA, Calif. — On this week's edition of the Bronco weekly sports wrap, hosts and student-athletes Denzel Johnson get you caught up on the latest in Bronco sports. After last week's episode from the Santa Clara Celebrity Golf Tournament, the wrap is back on the Mission campus in the university suite to get you caught up on the latest in Bronco Sports.
Baseball started last week with a 1-0 victory over Stanford at Sunken Diamond. Ryan Budnick's 10th-inning home run broke a scoreless tie and helped the Broncos sweep the season series against the Cardinal for the first time since 1974. Over the weekend, the team swept Portland on the road, which included a five-run ninth inning as part of an 8-6 win Sunday.
The Broncos play a midweek game at San Jose State Tuesday night before a Thursday-Saturday series against BYU at Schott Stadium. Santa Clara can qualify for the WCC Baseball Championship if the team sweeps the Cougars, USF sweeps LMU and Pepperdine wins one game against Gonzaga. Bronco fans, let's pack Schott Stadium this weekend as the team makes a postseason push!
Men's golfer Hayden Shieh is one of 10 individual qualifiers selected to compete in the 2015 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship. He will compete Thursday-Saturday in the San Diego Regional at The Farms Golf Club. Shieh's standout season includes four top 10 finishes and the West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year Award.
Men's rowing takes part in the Western Sprints Regatta this weekend with the goal of qualifying for the IRA national championships. Michael Brewer and Ian Crutchlow are coming off a First Team All-WIRA performance at the WIRA Championships and head coach Jay Farwell was named Coach of the Year. Congratulations to the oarsmen as well as coach Farwell, and good luck this weekend!Women's rowing will compete at the WCC Championships in Gold River, California this weekend. The team won a silver medal in the pair race at the WIRA Championships in late April.
Track ran at the West Coast Last Chance Open over the weekend. Grayson Murphy ran a 10:41.68 to best her own school record in the 3000 meter steeplechase as one of a number of Bronco runners to set personal best marks. Track returns to action Sunday at the Portland Twilight.
