Wilson Named Rawlings WCC Pitcher of the Week

WCC Release/Video

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Santa Clara redshirt junior Steven Wilson has earned the first Rawlings West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week honors of the season for the second year in a row. Wilson garners this season's first award — announced by the WCC on Monday — for his performance against No. 24 Notre Dame over the weekend.

Wilson struck out seven batters in 6.0+ shutout innings and did not issue a walk in Santa Clara's 2-0 victory over Notre Dame on Saturday night. The Littleton, Colo. native retired 11 consecutive batters during a stretch between the second and fifth innings. He faced no more than one batter above the minimum in each of his six complete innings.

"Steven was really at his best. He set a tone and put our team on his shoulders," Bronco associate head coach/pitching coach Gabe Ribas said. "Steven showed how good he can be when he works one pitch at a time and competes hard from start to finish. It's one game, but I was very proud of what he showed to everyone this past weekend."

The Broncos held the Fighting Irish scoreless for 15 consecutive innings from the end of the season opener to the middle of the series finale, and claimed the final two games to win the season-opening set.

Last season, Wilson threw a quality start against defending national champion and unanimous preseason No. 1 Vanderbilt on opening weekend to earn Rawlings WCC Pitcher of the Week honors.

Santa Clara faces San Jose State Tuesday on the road. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
