Baseball Falls to UC Davis in Gifford Tournament Opener

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Santa Clara baseball fell to UC Davis 8-0 in the opening game of the 2016 Jack Gifford Memorial Tournament Thursday night at Schott Stadium. The Broncos, playing for the fifth time in seven days, were outhit 13-3 by the Aggies. 

Santa Clara right-hander Peter Hendron (L, 0-1) threw a quality start, allowing five runs (three earned) on nine hits with two walks and three strikeouts in 7.0 innings. Luke Martin-Resnick pitched the final two innings of the game and allowed three unearned runs to the Aggies (2-4) in the top of the ninth.

The Broncos (3-2) committed four errors in the loss and struck out 15 times. Kert Woods, Grant Meylan and Stevie Berman each recorded a hit for the hosts. By game's end, 20 of Santa Clara's 21 position players saw the field. 

Aggie third baseman Ryan Anderson led all players with three RBIs on the night. He opened the scoring with an RBI single in the first and hit a two-run homer to left field — the team's first of the season— in the fifth. UC Davis leadoff hitter Alex Aguiar went 4-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. 

Zach Stone (W, 1-1) earned his first career win as a starter by striking out nine batters in 6.0 shutout innings. Robert Garcia (SV, 1) retired all nine batters he faced in 3.0 innings to earn the save. 

Santa Clara returns to the diamond Friday night for a 6 p.m. first pitch against Utah Valley. Bronco RHP Mitchell White (0-1, 3.18 ERA) takes the mound against Wolverine RHP Danny Beddes (1-0, 0.00 ERA).
