Baseball Falls to San Diego Saturday Night

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Santa Clara baseball lost the second of a three-game series against San Diego 7-1 Saturday night at Fowler Park. The Toreros brought across four runs in the second inning on their way to a series-clinching win.

The Broncos (15-18, 3-8 WCC) scored their only run of the game on a two-out, RBI double by Tyler Meditz in the sixth. San Diego starter Gary Cornish (W, 5-2) was perfect through 11 batters and struck out 10 Broncos in 7.0 innings. He capped each of his seven innings with a strikeout. 

Brhet Bewley put the home team on the board with a two-run homer off the left field foul pole in the second. With two outs and runners on first and second, Jeff Houghtby hit a ground ball to third base that Ryan Budnick fielded and threw on a hop to Bronco first baseman Jake Brodt, who had the ball go in and out of his glove to allow USD's third run. Bryson Brigman added an RBI single as part of the big frame.

Santa Clara starter Steven Wilson (L, 3-2) threw 5.2 innings and allowed six runs (three earned) on six hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Wilson struck out the side in order to start off the contest in the first, and sat the Toreros down 1-2-3 in the third and fourth innings. 

Houghtby tacked on an RBI double in the sixth and an RBI sacrifice fly in the eighth; he led all batters with two RBIs. Hunter Mercado-Hood went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored for San Diego. Meditz reach base three times and John Cresto pinch hit and delivered two singles for the Broncos. 

Santa Clara and San Diego meet for the series finale Sunday at 1 p.m. Bronco lefty Jason Seever (3-1, 4.46 ERA) will start against Torero lefty Nick Sprengel (2-5, 6.96 ERA).
