Baseball Begins Second Half of WCC Play against LMU

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Santa Clara baseball is past the halfway mark in West Coast Conference play, and continues conference action against Loyola Marymount this weekend at Schott Stadium. The Broncos and Lions meet Friday at 6 p.m., Saturday at 6 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.

Santa Clara improved to 5-1 in midweek contests by defeating Stanford 4-2 Tuesday night for its third straight win over the Cadinal. The Broncos have gone 1-2 in all five WCC series this season. LMU has won four games in a row, including taking two of three last weekend at Pacific.

Parking

Baseball parking has changed for the 2016 season. Parking is now available in the Guadalupe lot, adjacent to 455 El Camino Real. The Guadalupe lot is reserved beginning 60 minutes before game time through the end of the event for free parking. Baseball parking is no longer allowed in the lot behind Schott Stadium's left field wall. Overflow parking is available in the Leavey Center lot. Spectators that plan to arrive more than an hour prior to game time on weekdays are encouraged to purchase a parking permit for the Leavey lot. Leavey lot parking is free on weekends. ADA parking is available in the lot directly in front of the main gates; there is no general public parking in this lot. Follow signs for parking instructions.

Last Weekend

Friday, April 22 — GU 7 SCU 4The Bulldogs scored four runs in the sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie and take the lead for good. The Broncos produced a steady stream of offense throughout the contest, putting 12 runners on base with less than two outs.

Saturday, April 23 — GU 3 SCU 0Steven Wilson pitched 7.1 innings to match his longest outing of the season and the Broncos outhit the Bulldogs 9-6. Gonzaga scored twice in the third and once in the sixth.

Sunday, April 24 — SCU 6 GU 0Santa Clara scored four runs in the first three innings Sunday and Jason Seever struck out a career-high nine batters in a 6-0 shutout win.

Tuesday, April 26 — SCU 4 STAN 2: Travis Howard and Jake Steffens combined to allowed just two runs in 7.0 innings, and Austin Fisher hit the first home run of his career as the Broncos defeated the Cardinal at Schott Stadium.

Broncos in the Field

TC Florentine leads the Broncos with a .312 batting average, including a .373 mark in 15 conference games. Kyle Cortopassi ranks second on the Broncos with a .288 batting average on the season, and Kert Woods is over the .300 mark at .302 in WCC play. Cortopassi has reached base safely in 10 straight games.

Austin Fisher led Santa Clara by going 5-for-11 (.455) with an RBI and a run scored last weekend at Gonzaga. He is 7-for-14 in his last four contests. The Broncos outhit the Bulldogs twice in the series; Gonzaga had only been outhit eight times in 34 games entering the weekend.

Defensively, the Broncos committed no errors and turned six double plays between Saturday and Sunday. The only error they committed on Tuesday came with two outs in the ninth inning.

Broncos on the Mound

Santa Clara is switching up its rotation this weekend: The Broncos have gone White-Wilson-Seever for most of the season and will go Wilson-Seever-White against the Lions.

Seever is coming off the best outing of his career — the lefty struck out nine batters in 7.0 shutout innings Sunday against the Bulldogs. He has struck out 14 batters and allowed only two earned runs in his last 14 innings. The Broncos have won five straight games when Seever starts.

Wilson allowed three earned runs in 7.1 innings of a 3-0 shutout loss Saturday night at Gonzaga for his sixth quality start of the season. Wilson has pitched at least 6.0 innings and allowed an earned run or less five times in 2016.

White leads the conference and is tied for second in the NCAA with 89 strikeouts on the season (one shy of South Alabama's Kevin Hill). The righthander has struck out 9+ batters seven times this season. He allowed two earned runs on three hits with six walks and nine strikeouts in 5.0 innings against Gonzaga on Friday night.

Max Kuhns ranks second in single-season program history with 12 saves. He struck out two batters in a scoreless ninth inning Tuesday night against Stanford to pass Reece Karalus (11 saves in 2014) on the all-time ladder. Anthony Rea set the Bronco record with 13 saves in 2004.

Loyola Marymount

The Lions are tied for fourth in the WCC with Pepperdine and San Francisco at 10-8 in conference this season. Cassidy Brown leads the team across a number of categories, including batting average (.355) doubles (17), home runs (6), RBIs (37) and runs scored (27). Abbott, Busfield and Redman have combined for 28 starts this year — Busfield tops all three pitchers with 44 strikeouts in 64.1 innings.
