Baseball Closes out Midweek Schedule Tuesday at Stanford

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Santa Clara baseball closes out its 2016 midweek schedule in a road matchup at Stanford Tuesday night. The Bay Area foes meet for a 5:30 p.m. PDT first pitch at Sunken Diamond.

The Broncos closed out their weekend series at Pacific with a 3-2 win on Sunday after dropping the first two games against the Tigers. Santa Clara is 5-2 in midweek contests this year. The Cardinal won two of three contests on the road against Cal last weekend.

Tuesday, May 3 — CP 6 SCU 2The Broncos took the first lead of the game in the second and the Mustangs responded with three runs in the third to pull in front for good en route to a 6-2 win at Baggett Stadium.

Friday, May 6 — PAC 12 SCU 8Santa Clara brought an 11-run deficit down to four with a late rally after Pacific scored all 12 of its runs between the second through fifth innings. The Broncos scored six runs in the last two innings and came within one batter of bringing the tying run to the plate in the ninth.

Saturday, May 7 — PAC 6 SCU 3Santa Clara set the table early and often Saturday night, but stranded 12 runners on base and 11 men in scoring position. The Broncos left multiple runners in scoring positions five times. 

Sunday, May 8 — SCU 3 PAC 2: Santa Clara baseball used clutch pitching and defense down the stretch to halt Pacific's comeback bid. The Tigers got their leadoff man on base in each of the last three innings, and the Broncos held off the hosts to clinch the win. The Broncos have won six times in their last seven Sundays overall.

Broncos in the Field

Ryan Budnick hit .545 (6-for-11) to lead the Broncos during their three-game series in Stockton. Budnick and Stevie Berman each posted a .583 on-base percentage; Berman went 4-for-9 (.444) with three walks and two runs scored. He had four hits in the last two games of the series after collecting four hits in his previous 14 games. TC Florentine and Tyler Meditz drove in four runs apiece.

Florentine tops the Broncos with a .296 batting average, 15 multi-hit games and six multi-RBI games. Kyle Cortopassi had a 16-game on-base streak snapped in Sunday's win, which was the longest such streak for the Broncos this season. John Cresto currently owns the team's longest on-base streak at nine games. He has his safely six times in the team's last seven contests.

Broncos on the Mound

Travis Howard makes his 19th appearance and seventh start of the season Tuesday night. The righthander allowed three earned runs on seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts in 3.0 innings last Tuesday at Cal Poly. Santa Clara is 5-2 when Howard starts this season.

Max Kuhns is tied for first in single-season program history with 13 saves. Anthony Rea set the Bronco record with 13 saves in 2004. Kuhns picked up his latest save by holding Pacific scoreless in the eighth and ninth innings of a one-run ballgame Sunday.

Mitchell White notched nine strikeouts Saturday night to bring his season total to 101. White is the first Bronco pitcher since 2010 (Nate Garcia — 112 Ks) and third Bronco pitcher since 1998 to cap the century mark in a single season. The San Jose native needs 17 more strikeouts to reach the Bronco Top 10 for a single season. He ranks sixth in the nation in strikeouts and is one of only six NCAA pitchers to fan 100+ batters in 2016.

Stanford

Summerville makes his 12th appearance and sixth start of the season Tuesday night. He has started three games in a row, including conference matchups against Arizona State and Oregon State. The lefty tossed three shutout innings against San Francisco in a 7-6 win last Tuesday, allowing only two batters to reach base safely. He is the younger brother of former Santa Clara baseball player Peter Summerville '14.

Alex Dunlap tops the club with a .320 batting average. Quinn Brodey leads the team with five home runs and 30 RBIs. Stanford continues to lead the nation in fielding percentage at .986 and ranks 15th in the country with 3.03 ERA.
