Baseball Hosts Portland for Final Homestand of 2016

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Santa Clara baseball finishes up its 2016 home schedule this weekend in a West Coast Conference matchup against the Portland Pilots at Schott Stadium. The Broncos will host a Salute to Service game on Saturday and a day later in the home finale, honor the team's five seniors — Ryan Budnick, Kyle Cortopassi, TC Florentine, Peter Hendron and Nick Medeiros.

The Broncos closed out their weekend series at Pacific with a 3-2 win on Sunday after dropping the first two games against the Tigers, then fell to Stanford 10-3 at Sunken Diamond on Tuesday. The Pilots went 2-2 last week; they won one of three games against San Francisco and came back from a 3-0 deficit against Oregon State to win 7-5 on Tuesday.

Parking

Baseball parking has changed for the 2016 season. Parking is now available in the Guadalupe lot, adjacent to 455 El Camino Real. The Guadalupe lot is reserved beginning 60 minutes before game time through the end of the event for free parking. Baseball parking is no longer allowed in the lot behind Schott Stadium's left field wall. Overflow parking is available in the Leavey Center lot. Spectators that plan to arrive more than an hour prior to game time on weekdays are encouraged to purchase a parking permit for the Leavey lot. Leavey lot parking is free on weekends. ADA parking is available in the lot directly in front of the main gates; there is no general public parking in this lot. Follow signs for parking instructions.

Last Week

Friday, May 6 — PAC 12 SCU 8Santa Clara brought an 11-run deficit down to four with a late rally after Pacific scored all 12 of its runs between the second through fifth innings. The Broncos scored six runs in the last two innings and came within one batter of bringing the tying run to the plate in the ninth.

Saturday, May 7 — PAC 6 SCU 3Santa Clara set the table early and often Saturday night, but stranded 12 runners on base and 11 men in scoring position. The Broncos left multiple runners in scoring positions five times. 

Sunday, May 8 — SCU 3 PAC 2: Santa Clara baseball used clutch pitching and defense down the stretch to halt Pacific's comeback bid. The Tigers got their leadoff man on base in each of the last three innings, and the Broncos held off the hosts to clinch the win. The Broncos have won six times in their last seven Sundays overall.

Tuesday, May 10 — STAN 10 SCU 3Santa Clara fell behind 7-1 after a couple of early big innings by Stanford and could not recover. The Broncos had won their previous three matchups with the Cardinal.

Broncos in the Field

Ryan Budnick hit .545 (6-for-11) to lead the Broncos during their three-game series in Stockton. Budnick and Stevie Berman each posted a .583 on-base percentage; Berman went 4-for-9 (.444) with three walks and two runs scored. Berman is 6-for-13 in his last three games; he had four hits in his previous 14 games. TC Florentine and Tyler Meditz drove in four runs apiece.

Florentine tops the Broncos with a .297 batting average, 15 multi-hit games and six multi-RBI games. Kyle Cortopassi had a 16-game on-base streak snapped in Sunday's win, which was the longest such streak for the Broncos this season. John Cresto currently owns the team's longest on-base streak at 10 games. He has his safely seven times in the team's last eight contests.

Broncos on the Mound

Max Kuhns is tied for first in single-season program history with 13 saves. Anthony Rea set the Bronco record with 13 saves in 2004. Kuhns picked up his latest save by holding Pacific scoreless in the eighth and ninth innings of a one-run ballgame Sunday.

Steven Wilson has quality starts in more than half of his outings this season (7 QS in 12 starts). Wilson allowed 12 runs (eight earned) on 13 hits with three walks and two strikeouts in 4.2 innings Friday at Pacific. Wilson combined to allow three earned runs over his previous two starts against Gonzaga and LMU.

Mitchell White notched nine strikeouts Saturday night to bring his season total to 101. He allowed three earned runs on seven hits with two walks in 6.0 innings White is the first Bronco pitcher since 2010 (Nate Garcia — 112 Ks) and third Bronco pitcher since 1998 to cap the century mark in a single season. The San Jose native needs 17 more strikeouts to reach the Bronco Top 10 for a single season. He ranks sixth in the nation in strikeouts and is one of only six NCAA pitchers to fan 100+ batters in 2016.

Jason Seever has pitched a career-high 7.0 innings in three of his last four starts. He held Pacific to two earned runs on eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts in Sunday's win. The Broncos have won three of Seever's last four starts and are 7-4 when he takes the hill this season.

Portland

Cooper Hummel is the only Pilot to start all 46 games this season. He leads the team with a .337 batting average, 26 RBIs and 32 runs scored. Hummel has also drawn 30 walks and owns a .440 on-base percentage. Michael Forgione is 20-for-23 on stolen base attempts this season to top the team and ranks second in the WCC in that category.

Davis Tominaga has factored into the decision of all 12 starts this season, and has won two of his last three starts. He struck out eight batters in 8.0 innings of the team's 5-2 win over San Francisco on Saturday. Billy Sahlinger enters the weekend with a team-high six saves.
