SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara baseball announced the fourth member of its incoming recruiting class for the 2017-18 season, Cory Moore. The first baseman currently attends Huntington Beach High School in Huntington Beach, California.
"Many things stood out to me to help make the decision of choosing Santa Clara," Moore said. "The rich tradition both on and off the field, the Bronco family and the academic prestige. Also, the ability to get my education, play baseball, and practice my faith all at the same time for the next four years."
Like his future teammates Anthony Boetto and Tyson Coleman, Moore follows a line of family members that have played collegiate athletics. His father, Aaron, was a baseball player at the University of Alabama-Birmingham. Steve Thompson, his grandfather, played at Western Michigan and his brother, Dylan Keith, was also a football player at the University of La Verne. His aunts, Kasey and Kristen Moore, played soccer at the University of Texas-Arlington and the University of Portland, respectively.
Moore's Huntington Beach High School team was ranked No. 1 to begin the 2016 season and they have made the CIF playoffs each of his three years in the program. His squad won the 2016 National High School Invitational, an event hosted by USA Baseball in Cary, North Carolina.
"Cory fulfills a big need on our team in a left handed power bat who can play 1B," associate head coach and recruiting coordinator Gabe Ribas said. "Cory plays on some of the best teams in Southern California, from Huntington Beach High to Trombly Baseball to the Quakes Academy, to the Yankees Scout team. He comes from a great baseball background and brings a lot to the table in terms of baseball IQ and extremely good work ethic and desire, not to mention the fact that he is very dynamic with the bat."
At 6-5, 227 pounds, Moore is a presence on the field. For his sophomore season, Moore hit .329, scored 14 runs and drove in 18. He also hit two doubles and four home runs. Last season he posted a batting average of .265 with 17 hits on the season and 14 RBI to along with three doubles. He earned second-team all-league honors in 2016 as well.
"Cory is a big kid with huge power potential," Ribas said. "He is going to put on a show that makes Bronco Baseball fans very happy for his years on the Mission Campus."
