Meet the Future of Bronco Baseball – Eric Madrid

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara baseball announced the eighth member of its incoming recruiting class for the 2017-18 season, Eric Madrid. The left-handed pitcher currently attends St. Mary's High School in Stockton, California.

"I chose Santa Clara because it was simply the ideal fit for me athletically and academically," Madrid said. "The campus and facilities are quite appealing and it is in a prime location for me personally. I connect with the baseball coaches and share their philosophy on success, which I believe can make a tremendous impact on myself as both a player and person."

Eric will be the second Division I student-athlete in the family when he joins Santa Clara. His brother, Anthony, is currently a member of the men's golf team at Pacific. Madrid has been a member of the varsity baseball team at St. Mary's since his freshman year and earned 2016 TCAL Honorable Mention accolades.

Madrid threw 46.2 innings during his junior year with a 4-3 record, a 2.25 ERA and 31 strikeouts for the 2016 season. At one point during the year, Madrid posted three-straight complete games. In 2015, Madrid had a 1-1 record in 13 innings pitched with eight strikeouts.

"Eric is a guy we got to see develop over a longer period of time, and at the end of the day we were super impressed with his ability to improve from one year to the next," associate head coach and recruiting coordinator Gabe Ribas said. "Eric has a very high ability to execute pitches and is going to contribute big innings right away for us. Eric is the type of guy that competes at everything he does and that is on display when he pitches."

Madrid has had great success with his St. Mary's team, winning the league title in 2014, 2015 and 2016. The squad also won the CIF Sac-Joaquin South Section title in 2014 and 2015 while earning a runner-up finish in 2016.

"We are really excited to add a guy from such a great high school program in St. Mary's of Stockton," Ribas said. "We know that the championship mindset will translate well to being a Bronco."

He aspires to earn a business management degree and to pursue a career as an agent for athletes or become a real estate agent. He is a member of the National Honor Society, the St. Mary's High School Christian Service Program, California Scholarship Federation and the International Outreach Club. A standout in the classroom, Madrid has been named to the SMHS Academic Honor Roll all four years.

"Becoming a Bronco was a very easy decision for me considering the many opportunities the university has to offer," Madrid said. "I am excited to begin my athletic and academic career at Santa Clara University."
