SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara baseball lost 10-0 to Oregon on Saturday afternoon at PK Park in Eugene, Oregon. Gabe Matthews of Oregon had a big day at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a home run and three runs batted in.

Oregon (10-4) starting pitcher Matt Mercer earned the win, throwing seven scoreless innings and allowing just three hits and no walks while striking out five batters.

Freshman right-handed pitcher Grant Nechak (1-3) struggled on the bump for SCU (3-11). He recorded the loss after allowing five earned runs in 3.2 innings pitched.

Oregon jumped out to a two-run lead in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back. Kyle Kasser singled to leadoff and then came around to score on a Morgan McCullough double. Matthews then singled to score McCullough.

Oregon scored on an error in the bottom of the second and added a fourth run in the bottom of the third inning. Matthews singled, A.J. Balta and Matthew Dyer walked to load the bases. Nechak drew a double play but a run still scored.

The Ducks stretched the lead to 5-0 in the fourth inning when Matthews singled up the middle to score Kasser from second base. Freshman right-handed pitcher Luke Genova relieved Nechak following that run being scored and recorded the final out of the inning and the first two outs of the fifth inning.

Matthews homered to leadoff the bottom of the sixth inning. The Ducks added two more runs in the inning to lead 8-0.

The Ducks tacked on two runs in the eighth inning to end the game's scoring.

Generating offense was a struggle for SCU, who recorded just four hits and didn't have a runner in scoring position until the ninth inning. The Broncos went 1-of-10 at the plate with runners on base.
