SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara baseball lost 3-0 to Purdue on Friday night at Stephen Schott Stadium. After a high-scoring game on Thursday, the second game of the series on Friday was a pitcher's duel. Tanner Andrews threw 7.2 scoreless innings and struck out 10 batters to earn the win.
Andrews picked up his fourth win of the season for Purdue (8-8), allowing just three hits and not walking any hitters. Dalton Parker relieved Andrews and picked up his fourth save of the season, throwing 1.1 innings while allowing one hit and a walk to go along with two strikeouts.
Redshirt sophomore Eric Lex had a solid outing but was still dealt the loss. The Santa Clara (4-14) starter went 6.0 innings, giving up four hits, two earned runs and zero walks while striking out six batters.
The Boilermakers took the lead in the third inning when Evan Warden singled through the left side and then was driven home on an RBI double to right center by Harry Shipley. Nick Dalesandro then doubled to score Shiply and give Purdue a 2-0 lead.
Purdue picked up an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning as they loaded the bases via three walks. Skyler Hunter scored from third base on a wild pitch to put them up 3-0 and end the game's scoring.
The Broncos were 0-for-11 at the plate with runners on base and 0-of-5 with runners in scoring position. Freshman center fielder Andre Nnebe hit a two-out double in the third inning but was left at second. Junior second baseman Evan Haberle hit a leadoff double in the fifth inning but was picked off.
The best chance of the game to score for SCU came in the bottom of the eighth inning. Freshman catcher Jake MacNichols singled to right field to lead things off. He advanced to second on a balk and was then replaced by freshman Jason DiCochea as a pinch runner. DiCochea advanced to third on a groundout. But DiCochea could not make it home as the next two batters struck out to end the inning.
Up Next: Santa Clara will wrap up the series on Saturday with a doubleheader. Game one begins at 3 p.m. PT and game two will start 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
