Baseball Lose Both Doubleheader Games Late
PROVO, Utah – With heavy rain forecasted in the area for the weekend, Santa Clara baseball and BYU played a day-night doubleheader on Friday.  The Broncos were on the short end in both games, losing 6-4 in game one and 6-5 in game two.

Game 1: BYU 6 – Santa Clara 4

A two-run home run by Daniel Schneemann in the bottom of the 10th inning gave BYU a 6-4 walk-off win in the first game of the doubleheader.  For the Cougars (16-13, 5-6 WCC) it was their second consecutive walk-off win.  In the series opener on Thursday night, the Cougars won, 2-1, in the bottom of the ninth on a Bronco error.

Santa Clara (15-13, 4-7 WCC) starter Freddie Erlandson had a solid outing, allowing two runs over five innings of work.  Both those runs were scored by Cougar third baseman Nate Favero who led the second and fourth innings with a double before being driven home.

The Broncos trailed 2-0 heading to the sixth as the bats were kept in-check by Cougars starter Hayden Rogers getting only two hits, both coming in the second inning.  That is until the Bronco lineup got to the Cougar left-hander with back-to-back hits by Jason Dicochea (2-for-5, R) and Jake Brodt (2-for-5, R, RBI) in the sixth to knock out Rogers.

With two runners on, Matt Smithwick (2-for-4, R, 3 RBIs) hit an opposite field home run against Jake Suddreth who came in to relieve Rogers, to give the Broncos a 3-2 lead.

The lead was short lived however, as BYU's Brennon Anderson took Bronco reliever Luke Martin-Resnick deep for a two-run homer to put the Cougars ahead, 4-3.

Santa Clara tied it up at 4-4 in the top of the ninth on Jake Brodt's RBI single with the bases loaded.  While the Broncos were able to tie it up, they could not take further advantage of a one out, bases loaded situation, striking out twice to end the inning.

Schneemann's walk-off home run in the 10th came against Santa Clara's third pitcher of game, Michael Praszker (0-1).  The right-hander had shutout the Cougars in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings before giving up the long ball to take the loss.

BYU reliever Bo Burrup (2-1) who pitched a shutout 10th, got the win.

Joe Becht extended his consecutive bases reached streak to 28 games drawing a walk in the ninth.

Game 2: BYU 6 – Santa Clara 5

In the nightcap of the doubleheader, Santa Clara quickly put the result of the first game behind them, when Joe Becht led off the game with a home run, his third of the season.  It also extended his consecutive bases reached streak to 29 games.

BYU (17-13, 6-6 WCC) answered in the home half of the first to tie the game, 1-1, against Bronco starter Penn Murfee.  It would be the only run allowed by Murfee who pitched 5 2/3 innings before exiting with a 4-1 lead.

The Broncos scored a pair of runs in the top of the second on Austin Reyes' (2-for-4, R, 2 RBIs) two RBI double to plate Jake MacNichols (2-for-4, R) and Grant Meylan (2 R).

Santa Clara (15-14, 4-8 WCC) added another run in the fourth when Jake Brodt (1-for-3, R) drew a walk with the bases loaded.  Similar to the ninth inning of the first game, the Broncos had an opportunity to score additional runs with the bases loaded and one out but the next two batters both struck out.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Cougars cut the Bronco lead to one, 4-3, against Alex Waldsmith who came in relief of Murfee in the sixth.

Santa Clara answered with what was seemingly an insurance run in the top of the eighth when pinch-hitter Niko Holm singled home Reyes with the bases loaded.  Becht tried to score on the play but was thrown out at home for the second out of the inning.

In the eighth, with the Broncos ahead 5-3, BYU loaded the bases on two walks and a single off Waldsmith.  Left-hander Alex Barden came into relief and got Schneemann to ground out, allowing a run to score.  With runners at the corner, right-handed batter Casey Jacobsen smacked a double off the left-field wall to plate both runners for the go ahead runs.

Waldsmith (0-4) was saddled with the loss.  Rhett Parkinson (1-0) who came in the eighth inning earned the win.

The Broncos have now lost five games in a row as it will look to end the streak when it hosts cross town rival San José State on Tuesday night at Schott Stadium.  First pitch is 6 p.m. PT.
