SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara baseball lost, 7-0, to Pepperdine in the series opener of the West Coast Conference matchup on Friday night at Stephen Schott Stadium.
The Broncos (15-16, 4-9 WCC) were held to just three hits with Evan Haberle (1-for-2), Jake MacNichols (1-for-4) and Austin Reyes (1-for-2) each getting a single off Waves starter Cooper Chandler.
Chandler (3-2) allowed the three hits over six innings, striking out three and walking four to earn the win. Waves relievers Kiko Garcia, Jeremy Farraye and Dane Morrow pitched an inning each for the combined shutout. It was the second shutout loss of the season for Santa Clara.
Steven Wilson (3-1) started on the mound for Santa Clara with the Pepperdine lineup jumping on the sixth-year senior early. Chase Lambert led off the game with a solo homer against Wilson to put the Waves up, 1-0.
The Waves (15-17, 7-6 WCC) put up three runs on four hits in the third inning to go up 4-0 and added a run in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings. Pepperdine collected 12 hits on the night.
Bronco senior Joe Becht extended his consecutive bases reached streak to 31 games when he drew a walk in the eighth inning.
Santa Clara will look to bounce back in game two of the series on Saturday at 1 p.m. PT. Right-hander Freddie Erlandson (3-1, 3.31 ERA) will be on the bump for the Broncos against Waves righty Jonathan Pendergast (2-4, 3.67 ERA). The teams will face off at 1 p.m. PT. The first 200 fans will receive a Claradise tank top.
