Baseball Falls to Washington State On Saturday
PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State wielded its hot bat putting up double digit runs for the second consecutive game to defeat Santa Clara, 11-3, on Saturday afternoon at Bailey-Bryton Field.

The Cougars (12-20) scored multiple runs in an inning from the second to the fifth frames to take an 11-0 lead before the Broncos (16-20) scored in the sixth.

Jake MacNichols (1-for-4, R, RBI) led off the sixth with a line drive solo home run that carried over the left field wall.  It was MacNichols' sixth home run of the season.  Jason Dicochea (1-for-4, R) followed with a base hit before Ryan McCarthy drove him home with a two-run dinger.  For McCarthy, it was the second time he went the distance in as many days.

Washington State battered Bronco starter Freddie Erlandson  (3-3) for six runs on five hits over three innings as he was saddled with the loss.

The bottom half of the Cougar lineup did much of the damage accounting for eight of the 13 hits and drove home seven runs while scoring eight runs.

Aside from the problematic sixth inning, Cougar starter Scotty Sunitsch (4-1) held the Broncos offense in check scattering eight hits over six innings while striking out seven.

Reliever Nick Strange picked up a three inning save allowing just one hit over that span.

Santa Clara's Joe Becht drew a walk in the third inning and has now reached base safely in 36 consecutive games.

The Broncos will look to salvage the series on Sunday.  First pitch is at 1 p.m. PT with the Cougars sending right-hander Hayden Rosenkrantz (0-1, 4.57 ERA).  The Broncos starter is TBA.
