SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara baseball right-handed pitcher Steven Wilson and first baseman Jake Brodt were drafted by the San Diego Padres and Toronto Blue Jays in the eighth and ninth rounds, respectively, of the 2018 Major League Baseball First-Year Players Draft on Tuesday.

Wilson, the 231st overall pick in the draft, finished the 2018 season striking out 58 batters over 44 innings while posting a team-best 3.07 ERA to along with his 4-1 record and four saves, to earn All-West Coast Conference Honorable Mention honors.  Coming off Tommy John surgery in 2017, the 6-foot-4 hurler appeared in 16 games, starting in nine.  The three-time WCC All-Academic Honorable Mention nominee is currently getting his masters of science degree in business analytics having already received his bachelor's degree in economics.

Brodt, the 266th overall pick, led the team with 15 home runs and 56 RBIs while starting in all 52 games en route to being named second team All-WCC in his senior campaign.  As a junior in 2017, Brodt led the team with a .338 batting average to go along with 21 doubles and 39 RBIs to earn first team all-league honors.

Earlier this season, the right-handed slugger belted two grand slam home runs in one inning against Boston College becoming just the seventh Division I player to accomplish the feat since the NCAA began keeping records in 1957.  The Huntington, California, native finished his Bronco career in the top-10 in several categories including: at-bats (ninth), doubles (tied for third), home runs (tied for eighth), RBIs (seventh), extra base hits (tied for third) and total bases (ninth).  Brodt will graduate later his month with a degree in communications.

Wilson is the highest Bronco to be drafted since pitcher Mitchell White was selected in the second round by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2016.  The last pair of Broncos to be drafted in the first 10 rounds of the draft was shortstop Jose Vizcaino, Jr. and pitcher Reece Karalus who went in the seventh and eighth rounds to the San Francisco Giants and Tampa Bay Rays in 2015.
