SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara baseball announced the seventh member of its incoming recruiting class for the 2019-20 season, Michael O'Hara. The left-handed hitting catcher/outfielder comes from San Ramon Valley High in Danville, California, where he was first-team All-East Bay Athletic League and third-team All-North Coast Section selection last season.
"I could not have asked for a better opportunity to pursue both my education at a top academic institution and play college baseball at the highest level," O'Hara said. "The coaching staff is unmatched in its experience and dedication to its players. Coach Filter and his staff have made me feel like an integral part of the plan for Santa Clara baseball from the beginning. This program is on the rise to becoming a prominent force at the national level and I am excited to be a part of it. Being from the Bay Area, my parents will be able to attend games, which is very special to me. My parents are both alumni (class of '84) and I am honored to continue our Santa Clara family legacy. I can't wait to get on campus to start my studies and work with my new teammates next fall."
The 5-foot-11 O'Hara, who was selected to play in the 2018 California Baseball Coaches Association North/South High School All-Star Games and the 2017 U16 USA Baseball National Team Identification Series, comes from an athletic family.
His father, Mike, played football at Santa Clara in the early 80s with uncle, Patrick O'Hara, being part of the 1992 Pepperdine baseball team that won the College World Series before finishing his collegiate career at Cal. An aunt, Kirsten O'Hara, is a Cal Athletics Hall of Fame inductee having been a five-time All-American in Cross Country and Track & Field in the 1980s. Two other family members, aunt Stacey O'Hara, and uncle Joe O'Hara, played soccer at Cal and basketball at Brown in the 80's.
"Michael is a left-handed hitting catcher. He is a player that we think can play other positions to give us flexibility and brings a left-handed hitting presence. We are excited to have him," said Broncos head coach Rusty Filter.
