Baseball Loses Series Opener to Washington State on Thursday
Series Preview

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Washington State pitchers Brandon White and Owen Leonard combined for a one-hit shutout against Santa Clara baseball on Thursday night to open the four-game series with a 10-0 win.

White faced the minimum 19 batters through 6 1/3 innings and allowed just one runner to reach base on an error.  Reyes, who reached base on an error by the shortstop was subsequently caught stealing.

After 75 pitches, White was lifted for reliever Leonard who struck out five of the first seven Broncos he faced before the combined no-hit bid was broken up by pinch-hitter Cam Allie with one out in the bottom of the ninth.  The freshman hit the ball through the left side for his first base hit as a Bronco.

The Cougars (1-4) got one run in the first on Collin Montez's RBI single off Broncos starter Travis Howard and scored six runs in the fourth taking advantage of Bronco errors to break the game open.

In the sixth, Andres Alvarez led off the inning with a double and came across to score on Kyle Manzardo's sacrifice fly to give the Cougars at 2-0 lead.  After a pair of two out walks by Howard, Matthew McGarry was brought in for relief.

McGarry induced a what would have been an inning ending ground ball to short that Dawson Brigman failed to handle, allowing the third run to score.  Washington State put up six runs in the inning on just one hit, five walks and two Bronco errors.

White (1-0) picked up the win for the Cougars and Howard (0-1) took the loss.

NOTES
Redshirt sophomore Brandon Buckley returned to action since missing last season with an injury.  Buckley pitched two shutout innings.
