BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Santa Clara baseball won the series opener, 3-1, against CSU Bakersfield on Friday night behind starter Keegan McCarville's second straight scoreless outing coupled with RBIs from three Broncos.

McCarville pitched six scoreless innings scattering five hits and one walk while fanning five Roadrunners.  In his last two starts, the junior transfer from South Mountain Community College in Phoenix, has tossed 11 shutout frames to lower his season ERA to 2.35.

Santa Clara (3-5) scored a run in the second, fifth and sixth innings against CSU Bakersfield (2-8) starter Darius Vines to give McCarville (2-1) the support needed to earn his second win of the season.

Freshman Matt Jew (1-for-2, 2 R, RBI) belted a solo homer in the second inning for his third round tripper of the season to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead.

Jew was again in the middle of the action in the fifth when he drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Dawson Brigman (2-for-3) before moving to third on a wild pitch by Vines.  Jew then came home on an RBI single by Connor Henriques (1-for-3, RBI) to make it 2-0.

In the sixth, the Broncos extended its lead to 3-0 on Jake MacNichols' (2-for-4, R, RBI) home run, his third in as many games.

The Roadrunners scored its first run of the game in the eighth to cut the Broncos lead to 3-1 on a solo home run by designated hitter Ryan Koch off Holden Bernhardt who came in relief of McCarville.  But that is all CSU Bakersfield would get as Ethan Heinrich came in the ninth to close out the game to pick up his second save of the season.

Vines (1-1) took the loss for the Roadrunners.
