Series Preview

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Jack Lombardi's 2-RBI double in the second inning proved to be difference as Joey Machado and Cal Hehnke combined for a four-hit shutout to give Omaha a 2-0 win over Santa Clara baseball in the series opener on Friday.

In the second frame with two outs, Lombardi doubled home Braden Rogers (1-for-4, R) and Ben Palensky (4-for-4, R) who reached base on back-to-back singles off Santa Clara starter Keegan McCarville.

The two-run cushion is all Omaha (5-5-1) starter Machado needed.  The 6-foot-4 redshirt sophomore was in complete control striking out a career-high 13 and walking just one over six innings.  The Broncos managed to get three hits off Machado including two from freshman Matt Jew (2-for-4).

Cal Hehnke closed out the game pitching the last three innings striking out seven more Broncos while allowing one hit to pinch-hitter Cam Allie (1-for-1) in the eighth.

Meanwhile McCarville had another solid outing for Santa Clara (3-9) allowing just the two runs over six innings while striking out six and walking one.  The two runs allowed by McCarville are the only runs he has allowed in the last 17 innings spanning three starts.

McCarville along with relievers Locke Bernhardt and Eric Lex combined to strike out 13 Maverick hitters.

Notes
-Andre Nnebe returned to action pinch-hitting in the sixth inning for Ryan Jeffries with a runner on base but struck out.
