Baseball Loses WCC Home Opener to San Francisco on Friday
Series Preview

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Jonathan Allen belted two home runs and a strong outing by starter Riley Ornido helped San Francisco to a 10-0 win over Santa Clara baseball in the West Coast Conference home opener on Friday at Stephen Schott Stadium.

Allen (2-for-4, 2 R, 5 RBIs) knocked in a game-high five runs, four of them coming off his league-leading ninth and tenth home runs of the season.  His solo homer in the second inning off Santa Clara starter Keegan McCarville gave the Dons (14-11, 4-3 WCC) a 1-0 lead.

Aside from second inning homer, McCarville pitched effectively striking out a career-high nine batters in the first four frames, including five in a row.  However, the Bronco right-hander ran into problems in the fifth when he allowed four consecutive batters to reach base, on a pair of hits and walks with one out.

With the Broncos (4-19, 0-4) trailing 2-0 and the bases loaded and Allen coming to the plate, Santa Clara head coach Rusty Filter elected to bring in Travis Howard from the bullpen.  Howard got Allen to fly out to left which brought home a run to make it 3-0 before getting Robert Emery to fly out to end the inning.

Dons starter Ornido, who came into the game with a gaudy 1.18 ERA over six starts and 38 innings, allowed two hits to the first three Bronco hitters to open the game but did the not another base knock until he was pulled after six innings.  Ornido (5-2) issued three walks and struck out seven to earn the win.

The score remained 3-0 until Allen blasted a three-run home run in the seventh off Broncos reliever Alex Tisminezky to break the game open.

Grant Young relieved Ornido in the seventh and earned a three inning save allowing two hits and striking out four.
