Baseball Loses to Pepperdine on Saturday

Series Preview

MALIBU, Calif. – A day after being quieted by Santa Clara baseball pitching, the Pepperdine bats came alive on Saturday with 14 hits to beat the Broncos, 10-1, to set up Sunday's rubber match.

Santa Clara (6-22, 1-7 WCC) got on the board in the top of the second inning when Tony Boetto, Cam Allie and Ryan McCarthy hit three straight singles off Pepperdine starter Easton Lucas.  McCarthy's RBI single brought home Boetto to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead before the Waves scored 10 unanswered runs

In the home half of the second, Pepperdine (15-11, 6-5 WCC) put up three runs against Broncos starter Keegan McCarville on four hits, including a two-run RBI by Reese Alexiades.

The Waves battered McCarville with four more runs in the third to push its lead to 7-1, knocking out the normal Friday starter, whose start was pushed back by a day after pitching in relief last Tuesday.

Every Pepperdine starter except one, had at least a hit, led by catch Joe Caparis who went 4-for-4 and drove in two runs.  The bottom of the Waves lineup drove in nine of the 10 runs, including three by Alexiades.

Boetto and Jason Dicochea led the Broncos with two hits each.

Four Waves pitchers combined to allow eight hits and one run.  Lucas (3-2) went six innings giving up six hits, one run and striking out seven.  McCarville (3-5) was saddled with the loss.
