Baseball Shuts Out Sacramento State, 11-0

SANTA CLARA, Calif.Locke Bernhardt struck out 10 batters over five scoreless innings and the Santa Clara bats pounded out 12 hits to help the Broncos beat Sacramento State, 11-0 on Tuesday night in a nonconference game.  

Santa Clara (7-23) jumped on Hornets starter Evan Gibbons (0-1) early, sending 10 batters to the plate in the first inning to score four runs.  The big hit in the inning came from freshman third baseman Connor Henriques who doubled over the leftfielder's head to drive in two runs.  
 
The Broncos added three more runs in the second to extend its lead to 7-0, on two Sacramento State errors and two hits against Jack Zalasky who came in to relieve of Gibbons in the first.  
 
The right-handed Bernhardt (2-1) was sharp early, striking out five of the first six Hornet hitters, and pitched out of jams to finish his outing with four hits and two walks over five innings of work.  
 
In the third, Sacramento State (21-11) loaded the bases on a pair of walks and a single but Bernhardt struck out Steven Moretto to end the threat.  
 
Bernhardt closed out the fourth frame with another strikeout with two runners on base and got out of another bases loaded situation in the fifth with a strikeout and a grounder to close out the inning.  
 
Santa Clara added another run in the fifth on Jason Dicochea's RBI single and put up three more runs in the sixth on Henriques' run-scoring single and Dawson Brigman's two-RBI single for the final runs of the game.  
 
The 11 runs scored by the Broncos were a season-high.  
 
Four Broncos had multi-hit games with Henriques (3-for-3, R, 3 RBIs) and Tony Boetto (3-for-4, 3 R, RBI) leading the way with three hits each.  
 
Broncos relievers, Alex Tisminezky, Julian Tristan and Brendan Ecklbarger combined to pitch four hitless innings to close out the game.
