SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Eight Santa Clara baseball pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout, and Jake MacNichols drove in three runs to lead the Broncos to a 5-0 win over Cal Poly on Tuesday in a nonconference game.
MacNichols drove in all three runs in the first three frames to give Santa Clara (9-29) an early lead that the Broncos would not relinquish.
In a predetermined rotation, Brendon Buckley (1-0), who made his first Bronco start in over two years, pitched a scoreless first inning before giving way to Ethan Heinrich in the second. Broncos head coach Rusty Filter used a total of seven relievers with each tossing an inning with the exception of Locke Bernhardt, who pitched the sixth and seventh innings.
The Broncos got on the board in the bottom of the first on MacNichols' sacrifice fly against Cal Poly (19-18) starter Andrew Alvarez (1-1) which brought home Andre Nnebe.
Nnebe hit leadoff for the first time this season and collected two hits from the top spot, along with Jason Dicochea and Cam Allie to lead the team.
In the third, with the Broncos leading 1-0, Nnebe led off the inning with a single and came home on MacNichols' two-run home run to left field. It was the 11th home run of the season by the Bronco first baseman.
The Santa Clara pitching staff gave up just two hits in the second, and one each in the sixth and eighth innings, walked six and struck out eight. The Mustangs went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
