Series Preview

MORAGA, Calif. – Conor Thane, Ryan Novis and Joe Vranesh each drove in two runs and Ken Waldichuk yielded one run over 7 1/3 innings to lead Saint Mary's to an 8-1 win over Santa Clara baseball in a West Coast Conference game on Saturday afternoon.

After falling behind 1-0, Santa Clara (11-37, 4-19 West Coast Conference) scratched out a run in the third on a balk by Waldichuk to score Andre Nnebe.  With two outs, Nnebe reached on an infield single followed by a Cameron Allie double to put runners at 2nd and 3rd before the balk.

The Gaels (29-19, 14-9 WCC) answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, courtesy of Thane's two-run single against Bronco starter Holden Bernhardt to retake the lead, 3-1.  Saint Mary's strung together three singles in the inning with Austin Chauvin and Gio Diaz singling to start the frame.  They advanced to second and third on JC Santini's fly ball to deep center and reached home on Thane's single.

Saint Mary's extended its lead to 5-1 in the sixth on Novis' two-run RBI and Joe Vranesh homered in the eighth as part of a three-run eighth inning to make it an 8-1 game.

Waldichuk (5-5) struck out 11 and allowed four hits while walking just one batter to earn the win, exiting after 107 pitches.

Bernhardt (1-6) threw a career-high tying five innings, allowing five hits, three runs (two earned) and walked a pair while striking out four to take the loss.
