Three Baseball Players Selected in 2019 MLB Draft
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Three Santa Clara baseball players were selected in the 2019 Major League Baseball First-Year Players Draft on Wednesday - pitcher Eric Lex was picked by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 27th round and outfielder Andre Nnebe along with pitcher Keegan McCarville were both drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 28th and 36th rounds.

Lex, the 815th overall pick in the draft, posted a miniscule 1.07 ERA this spring, striking out 32 batters over 25 1/3 innings while holding the opposition to a .182 batting average to earn All-West Coast Conference Honorable Mention honors.  Lex also garnered WCC All-Academic honors boasting a 3.833 grade point average in graduate school studying educational leadership.

The Broncos closer recorded nine saves over the past two seasons averaging 11.37 strikeouts over nine innings.

Nnebe, the 853rd overall pick, homered five times this past season, second most on the team while playing in 35 games.  In 2017, Nnebe started all 53 games at centerfield, hitting .293 with 63 hits and led the team with 10 stolen bases and was named to the West Coast Conference All-Freshman Team.  In the summer of 2017, Nnebe was tabbed as the Coastal Plain League's top prospect by Baseball America when the 6-foot-6 slugger hit .290 with four home runs, 17 RBIs and 19 runs in 30 games for the Wilson Tobs.

McCarville, was drafted for the second consecutive season and was selected 1093rd overall.  In last year's draft, the right-handed pitcher was picked in the 24th round by the Tampa Bay Rays after playing for South Mountain Community College in Phoenix, Arizona.

This spring, McCarville tied for the team-lead with 21 appearances, starting in nine.  He led the team with four wins and 68 strikeouts over 64 2/3 innings.

A total of seven Broncos have been picked in the last two drafts as four were selected in 2018 – Steven Wilson, Jake Brodt, John Cresto and Penn Murfee.  The seven draft picks over a two-year span represents the most selections since 2003-2004 when seven players were also selected.
