Offense and Stellar Bullpen Carries Baseball to a 12-5 Win Over CSU Bakersfield in Series Opener
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara baseball scored 10 unanswered runs including Matt Jew's go-ahead three-run homer in the fifth and the Broncos bullpen allowed just one unearned run to take the series opener 12-5 over CSU Bakersfield on Friday night.

Santa Clara (10-5) collected 12 hits on the evening and got long balls from Jew and Ryan McCarthy who had four RBIs each.

The Broncos trailed 5-2 in the home half of the fifth when Matt Erickson got the offense rolling with a single off Roadrunner starter Aaron Charles to lead off the inning.  Coleman Brigman followed with a walk and the two runners advanced to second and third on a balk.  Jason Dicochea battled and singled up the middle on the 12th pitch of his at-bat to bring home Erickson and when centerfielder Jacen Roberson bobbled ball, it allowed Brigman to score to cut the deficit to 5-4.

Reliever Jaykob Acosta (0-2) came in relief of Charles and allowed a single to McCarthy before Jew's three-run blast to left field that gave the Broncos the lead for good at 7-5.

Bronco pitcher Locke Bernhardt (1-1) threw four innings in relief of starter Matthew McGarry and allowed one run while striking out six to pick up the win.

Connor Henriques doubled in two-runs in the seventh and McCarthy blasted a three-run home run in the eighth to cap off the 12 run outburst by the Bronco bats.

Alex Waldsmith retired all nine batters he faced to pick up his first career save.

CSU Bakersfield (5-7) opened the scoring with a run in the first on Nick Grossman's RBI single, one of three hits on the evening for the right fielder.  SCU answered back with two in the bottom of the first on McCarthy's sacrifice fly and Jew's RBI single before the Roadrunners scored three, including two on Daniel Carrizosa's single, to retake a 4-2 lead in the third.

Dicochea, McCarthy, Jew and Henriques each had two hits with Dicochea scoring a game-high three runs.  Along with Grossman, Carrizosa also had a multi-hit game for the Roadrunners.
