Baseball Collects 14 Hits in Win over Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. – Santa Clara baseball bats came alive for 14 hits in the 8-2 win over Portland on Saturday to set up the rubber match on Sunday.

Matt Jew and Michael O'Hara each hit a home run for the Broncos (8-14, 1-4) who were limited to two runs total in the last two games.

Jason Dicochea went 3-for-5 and scored two runs while Mike Bowes went 3-for-3 with three RBIs.

Santa Clara jumped to an early 3-0 lead on Bowes' sacrifice fly RBI in the first and Jew's two-run home run in the second.

After the Pilots (11-10, 4-1) got on the board in the third on Sam Brown's RBI single, the Broncos answered back with three more runs in the fourth with a two out rally.  SCU loaded the bases on a pair of singles and a walk against the starter Bradley McVay and Bowes delivered a two-RBI single.

McVay (3-1) finished up the inning allowing six runs (four earned) and striking out six in his four innings of work for his first loss of the season.

Freddie Erlandson started on the bump for Santa Clara and also went four innings, scattering four hits, one run and striking out five.  He left after throwing 64 pitches.

Cole Kitchen (5-0) came in relief in the fifth with a 6-1 lead.  He gave up a solo home run to Chad Stevens in the fifth but that was the only run he allowed over four frames while fanning five and walking none to move to 5-0 on the year.

Stevens went 2-for-4 and was the only Pilot with multiple hits.

O'Hara entered the game in the bottom of the seventh as a defensive replacement at left field and promptly made his presence felt robbing a base hit from Stevens with a sliding catch at the warning track.

In the ninth, O'Hara hit the first pitch from Nick Nygard and deposited it over the right field fence for his first career home run.
